James Shuls: Why We Need School Choice/ (Math Instruction/ Another Reason to Homeschool)

Throughout the country, lawmakers have discussed expanding educational options for students by establishing charter schools or allowing public dollars to go to private schools. Yet bills that legislators proposed often failed to gain much traction; in part, because opponents of school choice often hail the traditional system where children are zoned for a local public school based on their address. Some view this method of delivering public education as the model because democratically elected officials control the schools on a local level. Though democratically controlled local school districts meet the needs of many students, they simply cannot satisfy the needs of all families. Many families, mine included, have found the traditional system to be frustrating and unresponsive.

In this essay, I describe the problem with the democratic process regarding public education from my perspective. You may be inclined to agree or disagree with my conclusions about math pedagogy after reading my story. Nevertheless, this story is not written to convince you one way or the other in terms of math instruction. Rather, my story illustrates the difficulties a parent faces when attempting to exact change in his child’s school. In the 2011-12 school year, my children spent 100 days in a traditional public school. I did not anticipate pulling them in the middle of the year, but my wife and I could not come to terms with how the school was educating our children. We sought change, but in the end, we were left with only two options: subject our kids to a style of instruction we felt was ineffective or place our children in a private school. We chose the latter.

This article is about a father ( also an "educator") and his frustrating interaction with the government schools with regard to the insane math instruction programs currently in fashion.

Conservatives! Please understand that reform is not possible. What is needed is to begin the process of privatization of K-12 education. Our nation's schools are the very definition of a socialist-model, single-payer, compulsory, and godless entitlement.

When was it ever possible to reform a socialist, single-payer, compulsory, and godless entitlement? Answer: Never! Therefore...Conservatives, give it up! Government schooling can not be reformed. Remove your children. Urge others to do the same.

Another Reason to Homeschool

If these parents who are “educators” themselves had this much difficulty with the government school system, imagine what it is like for parents who are not so well connected.

As a single father of four, I sent all my kids thru private school, but did homeschool for a couple years.

Best thing I ever did. My youngest is now 33, oldest 43.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the “other” articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

““This is crazy,” I thought to myself, so my wife and I scheduled a meeting with the teacher. During the meeting, I brought up my concerns about our son not being able to use the standard algorithm to solve math problems. She informed me the district had adopted a math program where they were focusing on “deep understanding,” a phrase I would come to hear often in the coming months.”

What REALLY angers me here is the ATTITUDE of the parents, when they ‘discover’ that their kids are being shafted by our government-educational complex.

I can ALMOST PROMISE YOU that this guy had been warned, probably MANY times, about just how bad things are - yet he, NO DOUBT, blew off those people as Tea Party types, and just laughed it off. “Of course the schools wouldn’t do anything that dumb” he would say to himself, while finding out the laws for committing his former friends to the happy farm.

So, like Tony Snow, he finds out the hard way (i.e., through his kids) that those WINDBAGS, like Rush, weren’t just making this stuff up for ratings (or due to paranoia), but were detailing what is NOW taking place.

It makes our job next to impossible. But like you, we ULTIMATELY won - since we simply DID NOT these people have any influence on the primary education of our kids (i.e., reading and math) - because we understand just who they are.

So our kids compete against a BUNCH OF LOSERS that got ‘educated’ by the state...and it’s a walk in the park for them. Too bad the country gets destroyed, though.

Whatever.
Pleading for folks who might disagree with you to not post to you seems awfully weak.

Maybe you should get your pet issue declared a “religion” and post in that forum under the “caucus” protection.

Indeed! Having a solid education is in great demand among employers, and my children are now becoming leaders in their communities, businesses, and church.

Unfortunately, like Atlas, they are among those carrying the world on their shoulders. They haven’t shrugged, ....(yet).

Hello people!

If you must send stuff to wintertime, send it to me instead!

I’m an instructor who has taught in both systems but now teaches privately. :D

Well? I don't want people cluttering my ping list with arguments defending:

1) FORCING godlessness on children and FORCING them to think and reason godlessly. ( They must just to cooperate in the godless classroom.)

2) FORCING children into a socialist environment where they risk learning to be comfortable with socialism.

3) FORCING children into increasingly prison-like institutions where they risk learning to be good little godless socialist prisoners of the state.

4) FORCING taxpayers to ESTABLISH this non-neutral godless and socialist RELIGIOUS and political worldview onto innocent children.

Nope! There is no discussion that could justify the above, and to engage in conversation with them merely lends legitimacy to their immoral arguments.

And...I feel the same way about a few other issues, for example, abortion, slavery, human trafficking, concentration camps, genocide, pedophilia, child abuse, and human sacrifice. I don't want anyone involved in these activities for a friend. I don't want government teachers for friends either.

Yes, it would be a wondrous world full of rainbows and unicorn farts if nobody ever posted stuff to us other than in agreement.

Boring as hell, too.

.It is interesting. Substitute “slavery “for the words “public school” in any government school defender's argument. These arguments defending the indefensible suddenly become the **same** arguments used to defend slavery.

Try it. You will see.

Some things are beyond discussion and to engage with others lends legitimacy to the immorality.

There are some things that, for me, are beyond any defense: slavery, human sacrifice, pedophilia, abortion, concentration camps, etc. Forcing godlessness on innocent children, putting them at risk to be comfortable with socialism, treating them like government prisoners, and forcing the taxpayer to pay for this abomination is beyond any defense. I will not engage in it.

I’m not sure what the problem is for the government-defenders about being told not to troll this thread. They can certainly re-post your piece (as you did link to it), and then go on explain how it PROVES that public schools are the way to go.

...but they don’t. I wonder way?

The abuse of children isn't about being bored or being amused.

Government schools FORCE children to think and reason godlessly. They must just too cooperate in the godless classroom. This is child abuse.

It is child abuse for the government to FORCE children into prison-like institutions and march them about like prisoners when their only crime was the audacity to be born ( and possibly survive an abortion attempt.)

It is child abuse to FORCE children into government socialist institutions where they risk learning to be comfortable with socialism. Gee! If a government powerful is enough to give children tuition-free school, that child risks learning that the voting mob can give him **lots** of free stuff.
