Have you noticed the jetsam and flotsam that follows me from thread to thread?

No, no grammatical errors here.

Little bit of an awkward sentence structure, but it’ll do.

:)

(I do not have a ping list, for what it’s worth)

The first time I saw the lattice method was on a friend's child's homework. My first thought was "that's Napier's bones." The lattice method splits the multiplication problem into a large number of single digit multiplications and leaves all the carrying of digits to the addition step. It's not as efficient as the common method but it does reduce the chance of errors.

Is it a ‘good’ way to teach multiplication?

The key person you are looking for is John Dewey. Everything I use is ‘pre-Dewey’. It relies on John Neumann, former Bishop of Philadelphia (no, not the more famous Cardinal Newman). Look him up.

Most of the educational ‘reforms’ and ideas come from Dewey, who simple didn’t have a clue what he was doing. Unfortunately, he’s been *very* popular among the public education folks for a very long time.

The reality that public schools are terrible has been evident for quite some time. The reason why, is less clear. This is your answer.

Please remove me from your ping list.

I don't have a ping list.

Responding to your comments pings you automatically.

I could remove you manually from the "To:" field, but that is an extra step for me and serves no purpose that I can see.

Looks to me like you just can't stand anyone to disagree with you and plead that they don't.

Worse, you refuse to deal with the fact that you have called FReeper's
kids socialist faggot drones and commie sympathizers.

Anyone not in agreement with any aspect of your pet philosophy
is someone from whom you don't wish to hear and a parent of dirtbag
socialist faggot kids who are Godless and commie-loving.

Well screw that. My kids ain't, and your saying so doesn't make me want to kiss your cheek.

Actions have consequences. Suck it up.

Yep, I also notice that humblegunner hasn’t sent anything to me. So clearly it’s got nothing to do with the issue at hand.

Hey humblegunner, YUNO discuss issue?

What I find interesting about this thread is that there is very little discussion about the subject matter - it’s mostly about something you posted.

Indeed, most of those posting to you regarding your request must feel a twitching nerve in reference to the intent of original article.

I don’t really know if it promotes greater understanding of what is going on or if is just another algorithm to memorize and perform. In the real world people will just use a calculator to multiply numbers like 123x456. I might have to ask the kids (now 16 & 17) which method they use. I expect they’ll just look at me like I’m an idiot and say “calculator, duh!”

I have to admit I slept through most of my formal education ‘education’ courses. Showed up for the instructional ones though.

What is it about Dewey that has SO MANY educational types deeply in love with him and his philosophy?

I don’t believe that I was talking to you. We were just discussing the way the mouthpieces for public schools take over these threads, so as to distract from the specific topic being presented.

Hey humblegunner, YUNO discuss issue?

The issue I'm discussing is the fact that the poster of this thread slanders
good kids and parents who don't conform to her idea of perfection.

Another issue I'm discussing is the poster's lame & weak plea
that she not be posted to by anyone not in agreement with her.

YUNO pay attention?

Indeed.

It also appears that someone with very sensitive nerves has gone whining to the moderator. Thin skin there.

“Have you noticed the jetsam and flotsam that follows me from thread to thread?”

No kidding, their defensiveness shows THE HUGE PROBLEM with our schools better than anything we could come up with.

Heck, they could just ignore you completely, and when you post about “Godless Government Schools” most people will just blow it off anyway (heck, even I would...I never use terms like that) - but it seems to BITE them and they react like cornered animals - you’re OBVIOUSLY hitting something raw there, they would rather not have discussed.

Name some names, Bob.

If you can't..or won't.. then describe how you would react to having your children lied about and slandered publicly, Bob.

Have you any kids, Bob?
