VATICAN CITY (AP) — The Vatican praised President Barack Obama's proposals for curbing gun violence, saying they are a "step in a right direction."

The Vatican's chief spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said Saturday that 47 religious leaders have appealed to members of the U.S. Congress "to limit firearms that are making society pay an unacceptable price in terms of massacres and senseless deaths."

"I am with them," Lombardi said, in an editorial carried on Vatican Radio, lining up the Vatican's moral support in favor of firearm limits.

"The initiatives announced by the American administration for limiting and controlling the spread and use of weapons are certainly a step in the right direction," Lombardi said.

Obama is trying to rally support for reinstating a ban on assault weapons...

Note to the Vatican spokesman: When having your God-given First Amendment rights infringed by an anti-Christian, anti-American socialist, it would be prudent not to make suggestions that would weaken what little respect the uninformed have for other parts of the Bill of Rights. This unconstitutional proposal will just make it easier for the far left extremists in our White House to infringe on religious liberty to an even greater extent.

There is a point where the Catholic church went from a staunchly pro-human-rights position, to one so far to the left that it might have endorsed the former USSR.

I don't know when that happened, but I am glad I am no longer a member of their church. Of course, I was no longer a member of their church since about age 12.

Aw, you need a piano player. One more person to pack!

Good one! I've seen some of musicians at the Pentecostal churches -- guitars, drums, organs, fiddles and such. All that's missing is a mechanical bull and it'd be just like going to church at Billy Bob's! And I do mean that with good-natured humor since my intent is not to mock those worshiping differently. We in the coC get plenty of ridicule for the way we do things.

Are you aware of something in officially documented central Roman Catholic church teachings that would countermand what that priest is saying? On a lot of things that church does show a fair amount of common sense. If the priest is flying in the face of a documented teaching, Roman Catholics ought to press him to explain why he presumes to speak on behalf of the Roman Catholic church in saying what he says.

Zip it, Reverend. You’re not an American and you don’t get a say.

Disarming the public of every nation is a top globalist priority. I wonder why...?

As always, the media find one person, who in this case happens to be the spokesman for the Vatican who they make look like is speaking for the pope.

I bet there have been plenty of US Bishops who have spoken out against this too, but guess who gets the coverage?

The “Vatican” is not the Pope or the Church. And I don’t know who this chief “spokesman” is or what his position is, but he doesn’t speak for the Church.

The Church has always supported the concepts of Just War and self defense—which includes defense of family and neighbors.

I’d say this guy is some kind of well-meaning, liberal nerd, who should have been reined in before spreading this junk all over the leftwing media like this. And by his title he’s not a Cardinal or a bishop, but just a priest.

I’ve started to go to a Baptist church that has, well, everything shy of the mechanical bull. The worship leader even has a standing keyboard, which is new to me. And so what, as long as the ultimate focus is upon Whom it belongs (and the music is competent). If you sense a spiritual benefit from a-capella musical worship, then more Power to you. In most places, the keyboards are a great help. (Don’t be shot by the piano player!)

One more thing.

Rebellion to tyrants is obedience to God.

If the pope has a fault here, it seems to me to be in not calling this priest to account. Now if the priest wants to, say, become an Anglican or a member of a congregation that IS officially more liberal-looey, that’s between him and God.

The magesterium, usually depicted on FR as being such a uniform force for orthodoxy, suddenly becomes a herd of cats when some Vatican functionary steps in it yet again.

There's a whole apologetic litany in situations such as this, starting with “he was misunderstood,” going through “he doesn't speak for the church” and ending with “you're just anti-Catholic,” while avoiding discussion as to whether or not the statement in question actually does reflect the position of the church itself.

Lombardi is a nut on the US Constitution, out of touch with freedom, and will himself likely be swallowed up by Al Qaida next, for lack of an armed citizenry and effeminate military, in a country run by those who eschew the Church.

Laughable that this odd little man is considered to speak as, “the Vatican”.

The side effect is that “300 million firearms” in the hands of Americans keeps being repeated.

Which makes ‘Red Dawn’ pretty hard if not impossible ....... foreign entities (not counting the libtards within) should take notice.
