Declining birthrate poses challenge to California's future

California is losing its children.

After decades of simultaneously worrying about and cashing in on its ever-growing population, the Golden State now awaits a new challenge: too few children and, eventually, too few skilled and able-bodied workers.

"Kids are no longer overrunning us. Now they're in short supply," said Dowell Myers, a demographer at the University of Southern California. "It changes the priorities for the state."

The number of California babies born each year began dropping steadily in 2007, according to state public health records, but the birthrate began slowing years before.

From 2002 to 2011, there was a statewide decrease in births of 5 percent.

Around Southern California, the trend can be seen across many counties. Los Angeles County saw a nearly 14 percent decrease in births in the same time period.

Within the county, similar declines were seen in San Gabriel Valley and in the South Bay.

Long Beach saw the number of live births decline quickly - by 7 percent - in just three years.

In the San Fernando Valley, from 2005 to 2010 the birthrate dropped from 13.5 births per 1,000 residents to 12.2 births per 1,000.

And you come off with this BS about “oh don’t take your kids there, they might get tainted.” It’s just so beneath the dignity of FR and does nothing for the discourse.

It's also beneath the dignity of FR to apply opprobrious epithets to those who disagree with you--as you did in your first response to me.

“Younger people are leaving California in order to be able to afford to have children,”

First reasonable post in the thread!

Fiji, You are an absolute MORON! There are lots of areas of San Francisco where people raise their children successfully in decent neighborhoods. I don’t know what rock you live under but your moronic rhetoric suggests that it may be a place where the plumbing is outdoors.

Oh, so in other words, I'm an absolute fool of modest means from a rural community. But at least out here in my "red" county, kids have a better chance of becoming red-blooded, God-fearing, flag-waving patriots than those growing up in that "blue" city where you live.

Sorry, Vette and Roadcat, but you fail to convince me. The queers and faggots aren’t just in the Castro—you’ll find them everywhere, even in the surrounding suburbs—they, and the panhandlers, winos, aging hippies known as “street people,” and “smash and grab” car burglars.

I’ve been all over San Francisco—from the Golden Gate to Candlestick Park, and from Fisherman’s Wharf to the Cliff House—and I say that it’s a modern-day Gomorrah.

You're still making ignorant statements which highlights your idiocy. The locations you cite, are tourist attractions, and are not representative of the city. On any given day, those locations are full of outsiders from everywhere else but the city. I was born and raised in SF (when it was a republican city). It's outsider faggots from elsewhere that came here and ruined it's reputation.

Queers are hesitant to enter some neighborhoods lest they get beaten, which has actually happened often in the Mission and Bayview districts (resulting in some deaths). Some neighborhoods are fiercely pro-family and religious. The Castro district is, by all practical statistics the sole hedonistic Gomorrah type district you are thinking of. There are small pockets of filthy bums along Market, Haight Street and elsewhere. But for the most part, San Francisco is not much different than NYC and other major cities. I have seen far worse crap in Philly, Trenton, Atlantic City and other eastern cities. The one thing I do hate about SF is the liberal politicians, but hey, they're everywhere now.

I was using those tourist areas as geographical points of reference—Golden Gate to the north, Candlestick to the south, etc. I’ve been in many neighborhoods that are definitely not where tourists go, but I’ll admit I’ve never lived in San Francisco itself—couldn’t afford to if I wanted to.

It’s true that San Francisco feels safer than West Oakland—where I once got lost late at night—although in San Francisco, I always try to park on a busy street where my car is less likely to be burglarized. Piles of broken glass on some streets are not very reassuring.

But I have encountered plenty of weirdos in areas outside the Castro—a district that I have never visited.

And just how is all that so different from most other large cities? I don’t particularly like the gays, but I have had to work with them, and have found them by and large to be decent hard working folks. Sure there’s the radical “in your face” crowd and the do go out of their way to create a spectacle, but to suggest that all of San Francisco is a modern-day Gomorrah is really over the top. Tell us all, do you also hate the “ni—ers” in Detroit, or the “beaners” in Los Angeles? Personally, there lifestyle is less important to me than is their politics.

Here's hoping San Francisco will one day return to its roots.

Have you been in The Mission District lately? Lots of redevelopment between 16th and 24th. Lot of upscale stuff, so I don't know where the “indigenous” people are going. Ditto for Potrero HIll and the waterfront south of China Basin. New Housing is going in that the "former residents" could not hope to afford.

Lots of wealthy Italians and Irish in SF. I worked for one who bankrolled all the tennis courts at USF.

I may be somewhat in error. The mission was founded in 1776, and the original sanctuary, made from logs, was the first building in “the City.” The building in the photo was built in 1791—and is still older than most, if not all, of the surrounding buildings.

We could use a few more Italians and Irish in our neighborhood. Most of the "Italian" restaurants here are run by Middle Easterners and East Asians, and Irish eateries are few and far between.

If San Francisco is no different than any other big city, then why are their civic leaders and representatives as radical as it is possible to elect in a free republic? "San Francisco Democrats" are the most radical of the breed.

I never said I hated gays, but to me, homosexual practices are disgusting, and to take pride in such behavior is even more so. And have I ever said anything that is racist or ethnocentric, or are you just trying to "Alinsky" me?

And one last thing: you ought to use the proper form of "there," "their" or "they're."

And just how many other cities have “gay pride parades?” I don’t like homosexual practices any more than you do, but they are free to do whatever they want to in the privacy of their own places. Homosexuality has been with us from the beginning of time. I will bet you that most San Franciscans are as upset about the gays as you are, but they are also Liberals and are not willing to give up Liberalism to deal with the gays. You did use some slurs to describe homosexuals, so I was just wondering if there are any other groups that you don’t like either. Thanks for the grammar pointers, I’ll try to do better!

There's a lot of exaggeration and hyperbole about SF, especially about it being a gay city (actually a loud minority here). I do agree that it is much safer than Oakland. There is a lot of car burglaries in downtown SF - my cars have been targetted a half dozen times over the years. But Oakland is unsafe for people.

One of my daughters lived in Oakland, commuting through the worst parts to get to her job in Emeryville. I was worried as heck for her, especially when people were getting carjacked and shot at the same intersections she stopped at daily. There's stereotyping about Oakland too. It's not all black. The lowlands near the bay are black. Nice affluent white neighborhoods with yuppie shops are on the hills. Until you actually live in a city, you truly can't say you know it.

I've seen a lot of changes in SF over near 70 years. Much of it changed because of outsiders coming in from other states. The one thing that shocked me is that blacks have left the city in droves; used to think they would take over after the 60's but the opposite happened. Lots of white yuppies with money came in (many of whom were gay). There's conflict between them and poor homeless. You don't hear much about regular folks who are busy raising families.
