Five Dead; Teen Accused In Killing Spree (NM-Son shoots entire family)
The Albuquerque Journal ^ | January 21, 2013 | Jeff Proctor and Patrick Lohmann

Posted on 01/21/2013 6:53:58 AM PST by CedarDave

It was a “horrific” crime scene that confronted deputies Saturday night: Pastor Greg Griego, his wife, Sarah, and their three youngest children lay dead — fatally shot multiple times with an assault rifle and other weapons — at their South Valley home.

The suspect in custody is the couple’s 15-year-old son, Nehemiah Griego, who authorities believe shot and killed his mother, young brother and two young sisters about 1 a.m. Saturday, and then lay in wait for five hours before ambushing his father when he came home.

The Journal also has learned that authorities believe Nehemiah then put several loaded weapons, including the assault rifle, in the family van with the plan to drive to the nearest Walmart, gun down more people and eventually die in a shootout with police.

But Nehemiah called a friend first, who talked him into meeting at Calvary church, where Nehemiah’s father had been a pastor. It was apparently a Calvary church security officer who contacted 911 about the slayings at the Griego home late Saturday.

Nehemiah Griego is now in the Bernalillo County Juvenile Detention Center, charged with two open counts of murder and three counts of child abuse resulting in death.

The couple had 10 children, but only the three youngest and Nehemiah were at home during the shootings.

The sheriff’s office has identified the victims as Greg Griego, 51, a former pastor at Calvary Chapel, as well as at the Metropolitan Detention Center; his wife, Sarah Griego, 40, a stay-at-home mom who home schooled their children; Zephania Griego, 9; Jael Griego, 5; and Angelina Griego, 2.

The article goes on to detail the shooting chronology and the fact that the boy "may have had violent fantasies including killing and murder-suicide scenarios for much of his life" and the guns were kept in a closet and not in a gun safe.

A tragedy to be sure, but if a young male teen is possibly mentally unstable and with the guns not properly secured, much responsibility rests with the parents.

The suspect in custody is the couple’s 15-year-old son, Nehemiah Griego, who authorities believe shot and killed his mother

In the NY Daily News story, it's his father's wife. Important detail to sort out.

The parents should really pay for this mistake. Oh, wait; never mind.

The lesson to be learned here is obvious:

Store your weapons securely in a home with children, especially if one appears to have mental problems.

Another seriously messed-up kid needing help or incarceration and not getting it.

Another family in denial and ignoring obvious trouble brewing.

The guns aren't even an issue here. Had they been locked up the freak would have used a kitchen knife. Or doused them with gasoline and set them on fire.

I once had to "baby-sit" a teenaged boy when his mom (my friend's girlfriend) insisted on dragging him along to a ball game. I was the only unattached person in the group so I got the short straw. Anyway, this kid turned out to be a monster. He sat sullenly the whole time drawing sketches of murder and mayhem, including detailed sketches of actual people in the stadium sitting near to us being killed by torture. All he would talk about was death and killing. I was stuck talking with him for half a day and as far as I could tell he had NO other interests.

Long story short, had I been his dad I'd have had him evaluated for commitment. There is NO WAY I'd have wanted him loose in public. Or in my house. I wouldn't have let him near a sharp stick, let alone a gun. Of course when I broached the issue with my friend I was told that I was way out of line, he's just a kid, it's a stage, butt out. I hope they were right. But I wouldn't take a chance like that.

Sorry, but I cannot help but wonder if this weapon was of the Fast and Furious variety.

Further evidence that a family can do their best and the worst still happens...

Prayers for those left behind

Isn't it amazing how Liberals fall all over themselves to make any type of negative connection to anything Christian, while ignoring the blatant obvious violence, and human rights violations of radial Islam.

Progressives really are cowardly maggots.

so okay what is pa doing out at 1 am, what is pa doing having remarried, which is not biblical, and did the step mother break up the 15 year olds’ original family? Not saying it is an excuse, just saying pa’s misbehavior had consequences.

These “pastors” thinking God brought a woman than other than their living spouse and out carousing.........

“and with the guns not properly secured”

Be careful what you ask for. Imagine what a federally mandated “safe storage” system would be?

For the Feds, they spec a Class 5 safe when locking up handguns. And then if they spec a centralized alarm system with video, very few of us could afford that for a Buckmark and an 1100.

Wow, this is absolute proof of what libs have been saying all along. The discussion is closed. /s

This might lead to further investigation of the possibility that being raised in a two parent family environment (if one parent is female and one is male) may be harmful for children.

Thanks to the ACLU, the rules of commitment have set barriers that are hard to meet and therefore give little protection to the innocent. In addition to the strict rules, insurance company treatment and limitations on the payment for same cause many who need treatment to go untreated. Mental illness is very real. Just because we can't physically see a visible wound or detect an underlying cause, we tend to ignore it. Sadly this incident is a consequence of same. I know of no sure way to prevent these horrible events from happening - they will, from time to time, occur no matter what precautions we take.

For some reason, Satan really wants the American people defanged, and the old deceiver is throwing everything he has at getting it done.

From the ABJ’s link at the story:

“Greg Griego was a longtime pastor, known for helping former and current inmates, as well as troubled youths.

Griego had converted his backyard barn into a halfway house for released prisoners, according to neighbors. He also held services at the county jail’s “God Pod,” where he gave inmates spiritual advice.

Griego was a former gang member, according to an article posted on the Prison Fellowship website.

He is also the brother of former Democratic state Sen. Eric Griego....”

Not sure that comment in the headline is correct: ‘entire family’.

Per an article yesterday, the family had 10 kids. It didn’t say whether any of them were ‘natural’ or adopted, nor their ages, nor which ones were living at home.

Also, per one report, the perp did not use a gun to kill the 3 children. The implication was that he ‘abused’ [beat] them to death.

==

As I posted in an earlier thread, this was a crime of rage.

And, if it is true that the 3 children were not shot to death, that would surely mess up the Lib/Left/Dem/MSM agenda.

“do their best”? What evidence do you have to make a claim like that?
