It seemed that the grocery chains CEO, John Mackey, was that elusive creature for whom Diogenes searched so fruitlessly an honest man. Mackey is currently promoting his new book, Conscious Capitalism, and has therefore subjected himself to a series of media interviews, including one recently broadcast on NPR.
During that interview, he was asked if his opinion of Obamacare had changed since he wrote, in the Wall Street Journal, All countries with socialized medicine ration health care by forcing their citizens to wait in lines to receive scarce treatments. He answered as follows: Technically speaking, its more like fascism. Socialism is where the government owns the means of production. In fascism, the government doesnt own the means of production, but they do control it and thats whats happening with our health care programs and these reforms.
--snip--
He was questioned about his heresy by Norah ODonnell on CBS This Morning. His response to her interrogation was disappointingly craven: Well, I think that was a bad choice of words on my part What I know is that we no longer have free enterprise capitalism in health care, its not a system any longer where people are able to innovate, its not based on voluntary exchange. The government is directing it. So we need a new word for it. I dont know what the right word is.
OK, Mr. Mackey, if its not socialism and its not fascism and its not capitalism, what precisely is it? The humbled Whole Foods magnate made another attempt on Huffpost:
I regret using that word now because its got so much baggage attached to it.
Of course, I was just using the standard dictionary definition.
I think Im going to use the phrase government-controlled health care. Thats where were evolving to right now.
