AP IMPACT: Recession, tech kill middle-class jobs
AP ^ | Jan 22, 2013 | BERNARD CONDON and PAUL WISEMAN

Five years after the start of the Great Recession, the toll is terrifyingly clear: Millions of middle-class jobs have been lost in developed countries the world over. And the situation is even worse than it appears.

Most of the jobs will never return, and millions more are likely to vanish as well, say experts who study the labor market. What's more, these jobs aren't just being lost to China and other developing countries, and they aren't just factory work. Increasingly, jobs are disappearing in the service sector, home to two-thirds of all workers

...

this "hollowing out" of the middle-class workforce is far from over.

It’s absolutely fascinating how the traditional news outlets can report about terrible economic conditions, and the public refuses to attribute any of it to Obama’s policies, (or lack thereof).

Those who used to mock the dinosaur media were terribly wrong. The public is so stupid that the MSM is more powerful than ever.

Government destroys jobs. Progress destroys some jobs but creates new ones in the process.

They are trying to give the socialists a pass.

Bull! The amount of time people struggle with said computers more than makes up for the time "saved".
It's just a way of blaming the recession on anything and anyone except the politicians responsible for it.
If people have work, if they have an income and is allowed to keep it, they will buy products and services.

the induced slide of our nation from a manufacturing based economy to a service oriented economy has slowed a recovery from the recession - considerably. Bring back the jobs?? then bring back the manufacturing sector!!

I think you are correct. It will be bread and circuses right up to the bitter end. And it will be bitter, indeed.

The goal is to convince an operating majority to come to one conclusion and one conclusion ONLY.

Capitalism has FAILED! Time to start shopping the alternatives.

I am concerned about this too. There are two disruptive technologies about to enter the workforce. One is self driving vehicles, which will eliminate millions of driving jobs like truck drivers, taxis, and even non driving jobs, like hotels. The second is Watson, which can eliminate whole classes of jobs that require knowledge and thinking, not just monotonous movements.

Watson on Jeopardy

Denying the role of computers in improving efficiency is foolish.

It doesn’t help that now that this automation is available, Obama is working to drive up the price of human labor. It is a no brainer decisio to automate as much as possible when management doesn’t know what is coming from govermnet next to drive up labor costs.

The concept of adapting to the changing work environment, rather than sitting back like Cargo Cultists, and waiting for the good times to return is alien to these people.

Yeah, that’s what’s causing it.

It has nothing to do with deficit spending killing the dollar, or taking money from those who earn it to give to those who refuse to earn it, or the miles of punitive regulations and fees that the Managed Socialist state puts on businesses thus forcing their operations overseas to stay in business, or the massive hidden tax called inflation or the ridiculously high cost of energy (oil) despite worldwide gluts.

Yeah, it’s all because of technological advancements

AP, still bending over and grabbing their ankles for Obammie and his Commies.

Isn’t that amazing. It never fails. Based upon recent history we know that if this were George Bush’s administration the corrupt, propaganda MSM would daily be dumping this at his feet. But with Obama, it’s some strange, mysterious outside world force.

Remember the saying that when the American economy sniffles the rest of the world gets a cold or the flu? Whatever happened to American leadership?

Obama has been president for over 4 years now, despite all the distractions, WHERE ARE THE JOBS?

When will our economy get better?

Remember the stimulus? Obamacare? Obama and Democrats assurred us that all this debt and bureacracy would greatly assist the economy.

Where is the recovery Mr. Obama?

It’s a really vicious cycle we are in right now. Obama is DEFINITELY killing jobs, especially small businesses and he’s growing the government which as a producer, does nothing but take resources and mostly squander them. Technology has definitely replaced humans in the workplace & will continue to do so - I’ve worked in a small business (35 employees) and been able to automate (with one program) payroll, timesheets, A/R, A/P, and project management. I could run it all for the most part and did for several years ... didn’t need an A/R person plus an A/P person and a payroll person. One brother is an industrial engineer so he is constantly looking at automation opportunities. Regardless of what people think of Obama and the damage he’s doing, technology/automation is a factor in today’s job loss situation; however, it does take a business to automate/hire people and Obama is making sure such opportunities are becoming extinct.

Yeah, we might as well be riding horses and buggies because I waste time tinkering under the hood of my car. We cured polio, but people still get sick so what’s the use? Electricity seems great and all, but there’s nothing to watch on tv. What’s the use of writing when I’m still expected to remember things?/s

Yeah, I don't doubt all that, but NO jobs are being CREATED under Obama! That puts us in the cycle you suggest, a cycle that forces businesses to automate as fast as possible to offset the rapidly growing cost of doing business under Obama.

It’s a factor, okay, but it’s a longterm factor. It has nothing to do with this recession in particular and is ongoing during boom times, too.

“Where is the recovery Mr. Obama?”

This is beyond anything I could have ever imagined. The public is stupid beyond my worst fears. And the media seemingly will accept anything, no matter how bad it is, as long as it’s their savior in charge. This is instructive, and explains how atrocities happened in communist states without public uprising.

Another lame-excuse piece from AP that you would never see if a Republican was presiding over this disasterous economy.
