The Obama Majority
The Washington Post ^ | 1-23-13 | Harold Meyerson

Posted on 01/23/2013 9:54:43 AM PST by frizzled

There is an Obama majority in American politics, symbolized by Monday’s throng on the Mall, whose existence is both the consequence of profound changes to our nation’s composition and values and the cause of changes yet to come.

That majority, as the president made clear in his remarks, would not exist but for Americans’ struggles to expand our foundational belief in the equality of all men. The drive to expand equality, he said in his speech’s most historically resonant line, “is the star that guides us still, just as it guided our forebears through Seneca Falls and Selma and Stonewall.”

Our history, Obama argued, is one of adapting our ideals to a changing world. His speech (like recent books by Michael Lind and my Post colleague E.J. Dionne Jr.) reclaimed U.S. history from the misrepresentations of both constitutional originalists and libertarian fantasists....

Having established that the moral and practical arc of U.S. history bends toward equality, Obama vowed to push his demands for equality still further--to ending the systemic underpayment of female workers; the voter suppression that compels some Americans, usually minorities, to wait hours to cast their votes; the deportations of immigrants who would otherwise help build the economy; and the laws that forbid gay Americans to marry....

The waning of the middle class is, with climate change, the most vexing item on the president’s agenda and requires far-reaching solutions....

On Monday, Obama, secure in the knowledge that the nation’s minorities had joined with other liberal constituencies to form a new governing coalition, voiced their demands to ensure equality and to preserve and expand the government’s efforts to meet the nation’s challenges....

His majority exists due to racism and illegal immigration.

How about the “destruction” of the middle class is the most vexing item on the president’s agenda. We just won’t die. He’s going to have to use 1.4 billion rounds of ammo to finish us off I guess.

They seem to conveniently forget the fact that Republicans won the House of Representatives (the peoples house) and Republicans control the vast majority of state legislatures and Governorships. If Obama has a majority, it’s a tenuous one that comes out for him and not the democrat party as a whole. But why let little details like these get in the way of the medias Obama Lewinsky’s?

You know, with all these fawning, cheerleading propaganda pieces lately, we need a new kind of alert on these posts. The < BARF ALERT! > just isn't enough anymore.

I think we need a < DRY HEAVE!!! > alert, 'cause I haven't got anything left, not even bile, to spew out whenever I read this kind of crap.

Obama, secure in the knowledge that the nation’s minorities had joined with other liberal constituencies to form a new governing coalition

This is where we are at right now. Minorities have almost completely thrown their lot in with existing white liberal constituencies. That gives the left a governing majority coalition - one that is expanding fairly rapidly. Add to that the younger generations are increasingly alienated from the Republican Party over the social issues, and we've got a recipe for disaster. We are reaching a time where white rural voters can nearly unanimously vote conservative/Republican, and the massive urban vote for the left will simply eclipse those numbers.

The Progs want equal results rather than equal treatment under the law. Their idea is fantasy.

More eligible voters failed to vote than voted for either Obama or Romney. Put another way, between 2/3 and 3/4 of all eligible voters did not vote for Obama.

"Thursday's report, from the Center for the Study of the American Electorate, put 2012 voter turnout at 57.5% of all eligible voters, compared to 62.3% who voted in 2008 and 60.4% who cast ballots in 2004. In 2000, the turnout rate was 54.2%."

If Mitt Romney had managed to generate the kind of voter enthusiasm that George W. Bush (!) had in 2004, the result would have been different.

A vast majority of any minority except maybe some obscure group that once suffered under Marxism

other than that, it's any minority outside White Christians will as a predominate rule vote for progressive victimhood getback

the other group that votes the same way is White liberals, mostly northern or coastal and they are what seals his power

our ONLY HOPE is to motivate enough White Conservatives...that is where we can only turn 3-5% more turnout and win

we cannot turn enough blacks, latinos, orientals, Jews , homosexuals etc to matter

you would have to turn half of even the biggest of those groups to pick up 4% in the general

and turning half of traditionally progressive groups ain't gonna happen

they vote against us because they despise us and blame us

and Obama being one knows this

I saw this coming for decades...Cassandra..few listened..even here

True, but we only held the House because of clever gerrymandering. The sad fact is 1.3 million more Americans actually voted for a Democrat House.

and Republicans control the vast majority of state legislatures and Governorships.

Yes, we've done very well at this level recently. We've definitely had a crop of excellent gubernatorial candidates. On the state legislative level it seems that the less media coverage on a race, the better we do. I think that makes sense. When the mainstream media highlight a race it is almost always to the Democrats benefit - sometimes overwhelmingly.

This is a gagger.

Voter supression? Unequal pay for women? Marxists like EJ Dionne writing books on how evil America is?

The Leftist writers views are so vapid, so tired and so untrue.

WaPo is dying, you can see why.

Been that way here in IL forever. We folks downstate put up with what the King of Chicago and his voting bloc decide is best for us. They outnumber us and they get to vote more than one time each also. Even dying is not a deterrent to voting in the Kingdom of Chicago.

The President's remarks referred to, reflect not a serious vision, but pure ignorance--the type that flows from poor comprehension--of what Jefferson was actually saying in the Declaration of Independence. (See Declaration Of Independence--With Study Guide.)

The Founding Fathers were not a bunch of chanting Jacobin crack-pots, suggesting human equality as a goal. They were simply postulating the nature & role of Government, and needed to respond to the notion that the King or Government had a divine right to rule, even when it violated the fundamental social contract.

To address the future, please consider, Whither American Conservatism?.

Evidently "equality" is defined by how much money you get to spend on Air Jordans, Escalades and bling.

The President's coalition is indeed held together for the moment by the demagogue-in-power's use of the Blame & Envy Cocktail; but there are other approaches to politics, and it is not far fetched to construct a strategy to fracture that coalition.

Of course, we need to wake up Conservatives to the reality that you have tried to preach for years, here. Too many of our own people are in denial; seemingly, almost desperate to believe the myths concocted by those seeking New World Orders in Academia--and promoted by their canting parrots in the Media. (For ammunition, Myths & Myth Makers In American "Higher" Education.)

After all, the fantasy mindset of Egalitarianism is even more destructive to certain minority interests than it is to the White American mainstream.
