Robot avatar for physicians gets FDA approval

A robot avatar for physicians that can navigate hospital corridors on its own has received the green light from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The RP-VITA robot represents the "smartest" telepresence robot that physicians can control remotely to interact with patients in hospitals hundreds or thousands of miles away. Onboard software "brains" from iRobot — the company that makes the self-driving vacuum "Roombas" — allow the new robot to obey movement orders without requiring direct human control.

"Previous generations have had to be driven," said Charlie Vaida, a public relations manager for iRobot. "This one you can operate on your iPad by tapping on patient Joe Smith in room 32, and it's going to go there while avoiding people and obstacles."

One of the RP-VITAs showed off its navigational skills by wandering around the iRobot booth at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January. The clever machine represents a joint project between InTouch Health, a seller of telepresence robots, and iRobot.

Physicians can open the robot's app on their iPad to see an electronic map of the hospital and simply direct the robot to their next patient as they study the person's electronic medical record. RP-VITA carries cameras, sensors and a touch-screen display, including an LCD screen "head" that can show the face of the physician controlling the robot.

Somehow this won’t work out well - a patient needing a colonoscopy checkup will end up having both his legs amputated “by mistake” ....

Have something unnecessarily amputated, you don't say?

They try that with me, and it’s “I’m sorry, but this is no different than Skype. This is not a ‘consultation’. Bill my insurance, and it’s fraud.

I loved the EMH, he was the only REAL character on Voyager.

Robert Picardo was also awesome on Stargate SG1 and Atlantis.

Yeah, he was the best character on Voyager. Seven of Nine was nice to look at, but for entertainment, give me the Doctor!

Kick me, but i actually liked Neelx, more than chakotay, More than paris, more than kim, and more than janeway in her bad episodes...

He was actually consistent, he was the congenial trader who was a caring guy, he make have made food that was near toxic, but he had a lot more heart and personality than the drones that occupied starfleet and i am not talking about 7 of 9.

If I would have met Neelix, I would have tugged on his whiskers, LOL!

............

Chakotay: I blame the writers for not knowing what to do with him.

Tom Paris: Was Competent, which was impressive on Voyager.

Captain Kathryn Janeway was a deranged Sociopath who should have been locked up on that Federation Penal Colony instead of Tom.

Kim: Poor Dumb Harry-

Janeway as an actress ie. Kate Mulgrew was awesome...

The writers didn;t know how to handle her and she cane off Bipolar and Schitzy..

Tom Paris was a bit of a jerk though, or he was written that way.

I agree with you, the writers were horrible, I think all the good “Charcter Writers” were over at the DS9 studio and they had the second stringers left over at Voyager...

I will admit, I do like Kate Mulgrew and the venom towards her on why Janeway is a sociopath is misplaced.

It has to do with the fact that Jeri Taylor turned her into a Mary Sue at the expense of the other characters competence.

I agree with you, the writers were horrible, I think all the good “Character Writers” were over at the DS9 studio and they had the second stringers left over at Voyager...

That is how Ronald Moore felt and left to secretly re-write THIS script
