Gun buyback in downtown Seattle draws big crowd (funded by Amazon.com)

Hundreds of people showed up Saturday morning for a gun buyback in Seattle. One man even brought a rocket launcher. He said it had already been used and could not do any harm.

Mason Vranish said he bought it from a man for $100, but within seconds police took it off his hands.

“Their reason was even though it was single time use item it is still military property concern that a soldier had stolen it from the base or whatever and it wasn't theirs to own... so it somehow ended up in the civilian market illegally,” said Vranish.

Officers gave Vranish a gift card and said they will investigate and will let him know if he can have it back The event was supposed to go until 3 p.m., but the even drew such a big crowd, police wrapped up by noon.

....

The program is funded by donations from Amazon of $30,000, the Seattle Police Foundation of $25,000, and local businesses including Pemco totaling more than $118,000.

As Amazon has thousands of gun related products on their site.

I saw one man turning in a AK47 for his $100 gift card. I wish I had driven there. I’d have given him $200 for it and he wouldn’t have had to stand in line in the rain.

I bet in the near future their will be hundreds if not thousands of people surrounding these buyback centers with signs offering to double, triple or go 10 times or more for what the Police are giving.

Guilty until proven innocent.

Do they get paid in cash at the buyback centers?

Is there any record of who dropped off what (since even a pawn store has to keep files on items in case stolen merchandise is being fenced)?

Has anyone ever been robbed of his buyback cash/check after leaving such a place unarmed?

But some people were not turning guns in, rather they were offering cash to people who brought guns to the buyback. Some even offered free doughnuts as they attempted to buy guns on the street.

hahahaha

There were almost 75,000 background checks in Washington in December, and over half a million in all of 2012. I hope the libs feel good about themselves. I would characterize this as a useless exercise and waste of resources, but maybe a stolen gun will be returned to its owner.

Yes, that’s true. I have purchased pistol grips, slings, and iron sights, etc. via Amazon marketplace. I suppose they want it both ways. Bezos has his political beliefs but doesn’t want them to interfere with his bottom line.

Won’t be long some organized group of thugs will don some police blues, set up a tent, have a trailer mounted electronic sign saying Police Buyback-Top Dollar paid-or Silver and mobs of stupid people will come running over each other in a flash mob for their fair share of the silver.

And then just before the real police show up they take off with the goods and the counterfeit cash and the fake silver.

“One man even brought a rocket launcher”

A used rocket launcher is about as valuable a weapon as a piece of pipe. Either this is an old story, or there have now been two rocket launcher ‘incidents’ in recent weeks.

You can legally buy inert items such as rocket launchers and expended LAWS at many Surplus stores all over the nation. I would call these Gub'ment Lackeys running this thing a bunch of morons but that comparison wouldn't be fair to the greater moron community...

I’m sure they knew it was a surplus item. These buyback events are mostly theater.

The first Buyback program.

The Gunpowder Incident (or Gunpowder Affair) was a conflict early in the American Revolutionary War between Lord Dunmore, the Royal Governor of the Colony of Virginia, and militia led by Patrick Henry. On April 20, 1775, one day after the Battles of Lexington and Concord (and well before news of that event reached Virginia), Lord Dunmore ordered the removal of the gunpowder from the magazine in Williamsburg, Virginia to a Royal Navy ship.

This action sparked local unrest, and militia companies began mustering throughout the colony. Patrick Henry led a small militia force toward Williamsburg to force return of the gunpowder to the colony’s control. The matter was resolved without conflict when a payment of £330 was made to Henry. Dunmore, fearing for his personal safety, later retreated to a naval vessel, ending royal control of the colony.

Yup. Anybody who feels the need to turn a gun into a buy-back program would be better served selling it to a pawn shop.
