They're on squad cars and street lights, and they track where you're driving. Across Minnesota, police and sheriffs have been using automated license plate readers for years to find stolen cars and aid investigations.
Their spreading use and questions of data security, fueled by recent breaches of statewide databases, has focused attention on the lack of regulation. Until the data was temporarily classified late last year, anyone could ask police for a list of when and where a car had been spotted.
Lawmakers will soon consider restrictions on the data stored via the readers, with state Rep. Mary Liz Holberg, R-Lakeville, saying she plans to introduce a bill in the next few weeks.

These advanced license plate readers have pretty much ended the idea of having any privacy at all while driving...unless they are regulated.
As with most intrusions on privacy, the suppliers of the hardware go out of their way to tell the police to NEVER advertise the capability - so who knows how many there are and where they are. Also, as always happens, someone will have to get killed before serious efforts at privacy are started.

If anything we need to incorporate “rights of privacy” in the state constitutions. all of them.
This is just like the police using heat cameras to look inside your house without a warrent. The USSC said no to that. Now we have the impossiblity to left alone by the governemnt.
Odd how nobody has noticed licence plates can be traced at abortion clinics or the wearabouts of politician vehicles are now public record.
Just the stuff for figuring out where the ex-wife is so you can give her a little talking-to.

Yep. Texas is issuing lic. plates with improved reflectivity to aid these scanning technologies.
Law enforcement cruise through parking lots and such scanning one auto after another.
Kinda creepy if ya ask me.

I doubt most people would know that camera-looking thing is taking a shot of the license plate of EVERY CAR passing by, and then entering it into a PERMANENT, SEARCHABLE, database.
In fact, if I saw that, I’d think it was a new type of radar gun.
