There Is No Such Thing As A Free Breast Pump
Consumerist ^

How do you make purchasing decisions when you don’t have to worry about money: indeed, when money doesn’t enter into it at all? That’s what’s happening now in the market for breast milk pumps now that health insurance companies are required to cover them for new mothers. Stores can’t keep them on the shelves: basic models, fancy models, all kinds of breast pumps. Even mothers who already own pumps are getting new ones covered by insurance because hey, they’re free.

The Affordable Care Act (or Obamacare, if you insist) requires insurers to pay for the pumps because of evidence that babies raised on human milk have better health and don’t need to visit the doctor as much. In theory, this will mean cost savings for insurance companies overall. In practice, since the requirement just went into effect, it means that everyone is out of breast pumps. If every American family with a new baby can get a pump, whether they actually need one right now or not, this wrecks that whole “supply and demand” thing that you might have learned about in economics.

Eh, might save on formula ...if these Obamacaremoms even bother to use them.

Pissed me off. I saved and saved to buy my own ...they’re not cheap.

Of course, I have to save up money up buy my own stuff. These people just “apply” for whatever they want.

With formula at $9 a can or whatever the price is ...if all mothers really did breastfeed, it would help. But most moms give up after 2 weeks of it. It’s hard work and takes dedication.

Not me. The most efficient breast pump is the human infant. As a father, I have been known to do my part to facilitate the letdown reflex.

I suppose it’s only fair and equal for Obama to make
other pumps available to men....for free of course.

I love this equality stuff it’s so so so equal.

Women really make out.

They can either kill the kid for free or if they decide to keep it they get a free breast pump./s/

As Dr. Walter Williams would put it, “In order for one person to get a breast pump without paying for it, another person must pay for a breast pump without getting it”.

It’s actually not always true. I have a one-year-old and my wife breastfeed, as well as “pumped and fed”, and the baby would spend about 45 minutes at her breasts in a feeding, but if she pumped for about ten to fifteen minutes, she’d have enough to fill a bottle, which he would drain and be satisfied with in about five minutes, maybe ten. So, on average, the same result in about half the time.

It’s not about efficiency. The feeding activity is physically and emotionally beneficial to both the infant and the mother. That 45 minutes is not wasted time, as it is a great bonding experience for mother and child.

Back in the day when I was having babies the only on-the-market pumps were the battery operated ones i.e. wimpy.

A fellow breastfeeding friend and I rented and shared one of the hospital-quality electric pumps by Medela. And it was not a bank breaker. I'm sure women who can afford a smart phone and hair extensions and nails can afford a pump.

Certainly. My wife always nursed my son directly whenever possible. I was just responding to the previous comment about it being more “efficient”. But it’s nice to have a flexible option at hand for various kinds of circumstances where the mother has to be away from the baby for more than a couple of hours. It’s also nice to let her get a full night’s sleep now and then and let the father get up and feed the baby!
