WASHINGTON (CBSDC) - The results of a new study indicate that suicide rates among veterans in the United States are increasing.
An estimated 22 military veterans take their lives every day in America, according to the study helmed by Robert Bossarte, an epidemiologist and researcher who works with the Department of Veterans Affairs.
While the percentage of all suicides reported as Veterans has decreased, the number of suicides has increased, the conclusion of the study stated.
Specific trends were observed during the course of the study regarding the age and gender of veterans who most frequently committed suicide.
A majority of Veteran suicides are among those age 50 years and older. Male Veterans who die by suicide are older than non-Veteran males who die by suicide, the studys findings stated. The age distribution of Veteran and non-Veteran women who have died from suicide is similar.

I’ve known vets and widows of vets whose dealings with the VA have made them contemplate suicide.
Exactly! It was the dam VA that drove em over the edge, in trying to get the benefits they fought for.
Bring them all home to defend our borders and skies. Future suicides averted.
This wouldn’t happen if the buffoons on Capitol Hill would get rid of the ROE handcuffs and let them fight the wars the way they should be fought. They also need to pass a law saying that any “western media” types found in the battle areas will be shot on sight.
Being away from home is often the hardest part (especially for those in the field and out of contact with the world), besides getting very little sleep—what the journalists don’t know and not many soldiers talk about. But then a sky pilot (if the chaplain type) around infantry-related soldiers would have seen that in many sets of eyes.
The divorce/cohabitation paradigm at home often has much to do with it, too.
That sounds like a lot, but what is the total living veteran population? And how does that compare per thousand to the civilian population?
>>This could be correct. What is not stated here is the size of the veteran population. The articles does state the majority of the suicides is among those over 50. That makes sense as suicides among those over 50 are the majority and they are disproportionately related to health issues and depression. Casual readers will not catch this and instead believe it is another factoid about how combat vets from Iraq and Astan are crazy and dangerous to themselves and others. I deeply suspect the motives of those who wrote and placed this story.
I wonder how many of these men over 50 are the victim of a divorce with child custody battles? Most of the men I know who are depressed fought their worst battles in family court.
It's a media created perception. The truth is that the suicide incident rate is a function the graying of society. It just so happens that there is a higher rate of military service in the over 50 generations than there is in the under 50 crowd.
Suicide rates are higher in older men, often as a function of terminal illness, disability or depression, but that has nothing to do with their status as vets.
The media just wants you to believe that all vets are potentially dangerous killers of themselves and others.
And one of the side effects is suicide and suicidal thoughts.
Must be the result of a few patriots noticing that the “Joint Chiefs of Staff” and the Commander in Chief ARE TRAITORS..
Making you a doofus and cannon fodder while providing honest military service..
Can’t be good for morale...
You are guilty of politically incorrect thought. Those wizards of smart who direct the popular and political culture KNOW that the source of virtually every problem present in America are heterosexual white men who bitterly cling to discredited moral values and worse of all believe in a code of personal honor. These homophobic, chauvinistic, reactionary males are the chief reason we have not achieved a more peaceful and egalitarian social order. It is imperative that their values be constantly demeaned and any contributions they may have made be treated as what they are purely accidental and fortuitous. Until Amerikkkaa humbles itself before the peoples of the world and disavows its militarist , racist, and gynophobic history we will never be able to take our place and humbly serve the less fortunate peoples of the world we have treated with such brutality. (Sarcasm off)
Because the Boomer generational hump has moved into the demographic with the highest suicide rates.
Male Veterans who die by suicide are older than non-Veteran males who die by suicide,
This can indicate the vets are in fact living longer and in better health than non vets.
I hate the media.
Wonder if the draft has anything to do with this? (/s)
They treated like lab rats with all the drugs they’re shot up with. Not just the psycho stuff. I don’t trust the malaria drugs either.
Exactly! What is the rate? What is the rate in the general population? I saw a story a couple of years ago about the suicides of the returning vets increasing; only to find it was still lower than in the general population.
Around 26 million of us and growing.
“I wonder how many of these men over 50 are the victim of a divorce with child custody battles? Most of the men I know who are depressed fought their worst battles in family court.”
My, oh my... our son is embattled currently in family court NIGHTMARE in PHX. It is one of the more corrupt money sucking, humility stealing, depressing situation he has ever gone through. Any helpful hints are welcome.
The VA Centers are understaffed, unqualified and are not serving our vets. These lazy slugs collecting SSDI, unemployement, EBT cards. Pffht! Off with them. Our vets deserve better.
