Gov. Perry: Boy Scouts should keep no-gay policy
Associated Press ^ | Feb. 2, 2013 4:11 PM EST | Will Weissert

Posted on 02/02/2013 9:10:14 PM PST by Olog-hai

Texas Gov. Rick Perry said emphatically Saturday that the Boy Scouts of America shouldn’t soften its strict no-gays membership policy, and dismissed the idea of bending the organization to the whims of “popular culture.”

Perry is an Eagle Scout and in 2008 he authored the book “On My Honor: Why the American Values of the Boy Scouts Are Worth Fighting For.” It detailed the governor’s deep love for the organization and explained why it should continue to embrace traditional, conservative values—including excluding openly gay members and Scout leaders. …

Even though the Boy Scouts reaffirmed the no-gays policy just seven months ago, the proposal is expected to be discussed, and possibly voted on, at the meeting of the Scouts’ national executive board, which begins Monday in Irving, outside Dallas. …

No reason for any Conservative, Christian or value-driven Patriot to gave an inch...

Better to lose and be right.

Sigh. What could have been. I realize he had his flaws and the pain of the then-recent back surgery kept Governor Rick Perry from his normal ability to articulate well, but imagine a man of such Conservatism (and unapologetic Christianity) serving as the Commander in Chief.

Perry gets it right. Morally straight has the same meaning it had 100 years ago when the Scouts were founded. Powell knew what he was doing, which is why the Scouts grew to be the largest organization of boys and young men in the world. Now the homosexual activists want access to this group for their own interests, which are first and foremost sexual in nature. Kind of like an all you can eat buffet. This needs to be fought like the cancer it is. For the sake of the boys.

I don't pay much attention to the Governor of the State of Texas because of the inherent weakness of that position.

Lt. Governor, I do pay attention to, and that sob needs to retire to his ranch.

Gov. Goodhair has gotten more conservative as the years go by.

We've encountered each other a few times, including the tech-related threads. As far as I recall, we've never had a disagreement and I don't intend to get crossways now. We differ on Rick Perry and that's understandable since we look at things through different lenses, even as Conservatives.

My only request is that you reconsider the use of the term "Gov. Goodhair". It originated from the beastly Molly Ivins, perhaps the only person, when she was alive, who made Helen Thomas look like a fashion model. Well...maybe not to that extent. :-)

It's probably just me but using phraseology from the left is something I try my best to avoid. That's why I've never used "gay" when discussing sodomites since it's a word they've dragged through the mud. Like I said, just consider the evil source of "Goodhair" and if you think otherwise, just tell me to take a long walk off a short pier.

Perry would have been a good nominee..

Many others would come to mind before I settled for Perry.

But... He does support the 2nd Amendment. He doesn't support abortion. He doesn't support government health-care. And he has reduced government.

So he would get my vote if he won the nomination. I wouldn't vote for him in a primary.

“Gayness” is such a warping and misdirection of what God created masculine relationships (and selfhood) to be. It would turn Boy Scouts into a farce.

I started using the term back when Perry was speaking out and pushing for some very un-conservative things. Molly (she's still dead) nailed him dead to rights on the hair back then.

Having given consideration to your point and noticing that he's less blow-dried than when he was pushing for unconservative stuff, I will relent.

From now on, I'll just call him the coyote killer.

Very well done!

And best of all Molly Ivins is still dead although I'm sure she and Ted Kennedy are exchanging a few pleasantries for all of eternity with a not-so-flickering fire to keep them well roasted...

Gabrial: “Kind of like an all you can eat buffet.”

That might be the goal of some homosexuals, but that’s not a useful argument for stopping the queering of the scouts. I’m not saying you’re wrong. I’m saying only a small percentage of radical homosexuals see the scouts as a farm team.

Politically, people who support changing the policy see this as an equal rights issue, and we give the other side ammo when we focus on the most extreme elements. There are more common concerns, like sexual attraction. For example, would it be wise to let a man take a girl scout troop on a camping trip? If not, why not? Even if the man meant well, wouldn’t it create more opportunities for harm to the girls? I think so.

Well, I think homosexuals leading troops of young men and boys creates similiar opportunities for bad things to occur. Again, it creates an easily avoidable opportunity for harm to the boys, and protecting the boys, not equal rights, must be our prime concern.

Yes, the queering process is less about flaming queen behavior than it is about making queerness normative. More defining deviancy down.

I hope Rick runs again for President. I think he will find a more attentive electorate.

We really missed the boat this last cycle. What could have been..

Good post.

The thing that comes to my mind, as well, is why would a homosexual man open himself up to the possibilty of legal action (possibly prison) by putting himself is such a situation? Or why would the Boy Scout organization risk getting sued by allowing this situation?

All it takes is for a child to say...”he is gay and touched me wrong”.

It makes no sense...politically correct or not.

Boycott Intel, Merc, and UPS, plus AT&T

Unlike the BSA’s Learning for Life, membership in the traditional BSA programs is more restricted and controversial. Girls may not join Cub Scouting or Boy Scouting, but may join Venturing and Sea Scouting; women can be adult volunteers in all programs. The BSA prohibits “avowed” gay and lesbian children and adults from participation, citing its principle to be “morally straight”. The BSA takes a similar prohibitive stance toward both children and adults who are atheist and agnostic, citing its “Duty to God” principle.[35][36][37][38]

In 2000, the Supreme Court ruled in Boy Scouts of America v. Dale that Boy Scouts, and all private organizations, have the constitutionally protected right under the First Amendment of freedom of association to set membership standards.[39] In 2004, the BSA adopted a new policy statement, including the following as a “Youth Leadership” policy:

“Boy Scouts of America believes that homosexual conduct is inconsistent with the obligations in the Scout Oath and Scout Law to be morally straight and clean in thought, word, and deed. The conduct of youth members must be in compliance with the Scout Oath and Law, and membership in Boy Scouts of America is contingent upon the willingness to accept Scouting’s values and beliefs. Most boys join Scouting when they are 10 or 11 years old. As they continue in the program, all Scouts are expected to take leadership positions. In the unlikely event that an older boy were to hold himself out as homosexual, he would not be able to continue in a youth leadership position.”[40]

BSALegal.org published these policies until February 2010, when it was removed from their website.[40]

At the Scouts annual meeting in April 2012, a leader from the Northeast presented a resolution that “would allow individual units to accept gays as adult leaders”.[41][42] However in July 2012, at the culmination of a review started in 2010, an 11 person committee convened by the BSA reached a “unanimous consensus” recommending retaining the current policy.[43][44] Intel,[45] UPS,[46] and Merck[47][48] cut financial ties with the BSA over the policy decision. Within the BSA National Executive Board, members James Turley, CEO of Ernst & Young, and Randall Stephenson, CEO of AT&T and who is “on track to become president of the Scout’s national board in 2014”,[49] have publicly opposed the policy and stated their intention “to work from within the BSA Board to actively encourage dialogue and sustainable progress” in changing the policy.[50] On January 28, 2013, the BSA announced they were considering rescinding the ban on homosexuals, allowing chartered organizations to determine local policy.[51]

I don't think gay scout leaders is what they originally had in mind with the motto "Be Prepared".

I know what the Boy Scouts are supposed to represent, but thanks for the overview.

So are you trying to say that altering verbage in their credo will protect them from lawsuits?

That was my question...and I don’t think it will. (of course I’m not a lawyer and don’t even play one on tv).
