The NRA’s tone-deaf rhetoric
The Washington Post ^ | February 5, 2013 | Eugene Robinson

Posted on 02/05/2013 7:52:29 AM PST by fractionated

Despite the best efforts of the National Rifle Association (NRA) and like-minded groups to make sure this business remains unfinished, reducing gun violence remains stubbornly high on the nation’s agenda.

This is partly due to the ravings of Wayne LaPierre, the NRA’s executive vice president and spokesman, who almost single-handedly, or single-mouthedly, is making the pro-gun argument sound even crazier and more irresponsible than it is. And that’s saying something.

This weekend, LaPierre treated viewers of “Fox News Sunday” to some of his lunacy. Anchor Chris Wallace gave him the opportunity to disavow the NRA’s shameful ad accusing President Obama of hypocrisy for supporting gun control while his own family is protected by armed Secret Service agents. LaPierre stuck to his guns, such as they were....

In Senate hearings last week, LaPierre portrayed life in the United States as one long horror movie. “What people all over the country fear today is being abandoned by their government,” he said. “If a tornado hits, if a hurricane hits, if a riot occurs, that they’re going to be out there alone, and the only way they’re going to protect themselves, in the cold, in the dark, when they’re vulnerable, is with a firearm.”

He left out the zombies.

With so many members of Congress already bought and paid for, it’s understandable that the NRA would feel a measure of confidence. But I believe the pro-gun lobby is seriously overplaying its hand, and that the wind has shifted....

The goal of this government (President) is to have all gun owners register their guns. Once this is accomplished, the governmet will know where every gun is and can confiscate them on short notice. Our freedom under the second amendment will mean nothing. So eveyone should reject any notion of
registering every wepon. K2afe

Eugene Robinson is a native of Orangeburg, South Carolina, the site of the infamous “Orangeburg Massacre” of 1968 where three rioters were killed & the city has been racially polarized ever since. He is of that generation.

Any disagreement with his views is always due to racism, the NRA is a white mens’ club, the KKK is alive & well, the Republican Party is home to all the bigots who left the Democratic Party after LBJ, the civil rights struggle of the 1960’s never really ended, you get the idea.

I live in the capital Columbia, & I would love to see a pro-gun control demonstration at the State House. Counterprotesters would outnumber gungrabbers ten to one. Many think the most gun friendly states are Idaho & Montana. They should visit the Palmetto State.

I think it is way overdue that we finally make the AAA responsible for drunk driving.

“The NRA had the guts to suggest that Newtown hire armed security guards for their schools and was mocked and denigrated by the Libtard Press.”

What the NRA suggested was a Federal power grab, placing federal security guards in schools. This should be handled at the local level. Nevertheless I’ve been generally impressed with how they’ve stepped up to the plate. Still I expect more from them, NY state just passed an unconstitutional gun grab, the NRA is well funded so I wait with interest for them to spend some of that money by filing a legal challenge against the State of NY.

Here is a good article by Forbes that shows just who is getting shot in what foot. You should read it. It might open your libtard eyes to the truth.

Eugene Robinson is unarmed and his house is unprotected!

Don't bet on that... Who was the Chicago anti-gun writer some years ago who shot a kid who went swimming in his pool using an illegal handgun? He said he didn't feel safe, and got it from a relative in law enforcement.

Given his connections, neither he, nor the relative who gave him the illegal handgun got more than the tiniest slap on the wrist.

BTW, he continued to write columns singing the praises of "gun control" after that!

From the article:

Wallace noted that he sent his children to the same school the Obama daughters attend, and there were no armed guards on campus.

Oh really, Mr. Wallace? Here is the staff directory webpage for Sidwell Friends school, showing 11 enteries under "security."

“What the NRA suggested was a Federal power grab, placing federal security guards in schools. “

I think if you look at what La Pierre really said he is advocating a private task force sponsored by the NRA to coordinate the use of retired local LEO’s and military people along with local security personnel not a federal school police force.

“But what the N.R.A. proposed would expand the use of armed officers nationwide and make greater use of not just police officers, but armed volunteers — including retired police officers and reservists — to patrol school grounds”

A quote from the NY times article.

The rhetoric of this article is pushing me to renew my NRA membership this AM, as soon as I am done browsing FR.

Also going to call GOA & see about getting a membership there.

I am on limited Soc Sec income, and don’t have bucks to throw away, but this is important.

Perhaps for those who live in the gated “ guarded communities”, you don’t see the need for a weapon.

I DO see the need, and I have lived rural for over 20 years & I live alone. Dogs are the best warning system I have. Weapons of any kind are my best protection. Sheriff cannot always be on my road.

“Today we begin to disarm the criminal and the careless and the insane. All of our people who are deeply concerned in this country about law and order should hail this day.

- Lyndon Johnson when he signed the 1968 GCA into law.””

Within a very few short years, the ACLU had turned the insane loose into the general population.

Just ask some residents of New Jersey.

Sandy spurred a rash of gun permit applications in my town and it only got larger after Owebama was re-kinged. I live in one of the safest towns in America (in NJ) for its size but after Sandy the police were busy with traffic duty, grocery store security and manning gas station lines so we were left to fend for ourselves. There were push-ins, robberies and suspicious people walking around on dark streets and trails.

This and the blackout after Irene made people go out and get what they needed to survive. Water, power and powder.

The NRA is finally holding the line on our INHERENT right to self defense via firearms. Any infringement is unconstitutional. The NRA has not been shooting itself in the foot on this issue. They are hitting in one ragged hole in the X-ring.
