Immigration's Latest Ally: Christian Right
Politico ^ | February 6, 2013 | Anna Palmer

The usual suspects pushing immigration reform have a new ally in the fight this time — the religious right.

Ralph Reed’s group, the Faith and Freedom Coalition. released a letter Tuesday that outlines broad goals for reform, like keeping families together, reforming the visa system and securing the border.

High profile leaders are also weighing in. Mathew Staver, vice president of Liberty University, the college started by former TV minister Jerry Falwell, is on board. Focus on the Family is supporting immigration reform for the first time in its history — even using its radio broadcast that reaches millions to push its message.

“Many of the most hostile critics got beat, a fact not lost on the other House members,” said Richard Land of the Southern Baptist Convention, referring to Republicans who have lost their seats since 2006.

The National Association of Evangelicals has launched a 40-day “I was a stranger” campaign asking parishioners to read a bible verse dealing with immigrants each day.

Religious leaders who see Hispanics as a growing part of their congregations.

“Part of it has been a real campaign for awareness of the issue and what’s at stake on the issue,” Land said. “There’s also the fact that some evangelicals have figured out that these people are mostly allies when it comes to social issues and unless you drive them away by being anti-Hispanic, they are going to vote the way social conservatives would like them to.”

“This is basically an answered prayer,” said Rev. Samuel Rodriguez of the activity. “The conversation has finally evolved where deportation is no longer part of the immigration lexicon. It is now about legalization.”

The group helped facilitate more than 70 meetings on Capitol Hill in December, of which 56 were with Republicans.

The article doesn’t seem to support the title.

I saw him on a Sunday show talking about this, I couldnt tell what he was specifically calling for, I just heard fuzzy feel good compassionate sounding general goals from him

My guess is he is trying to get Hispanic supporters for his group after last year's whipping.

Is there a certain ambigity about definitions? The author is calling the Faith and Freedom Coalition (Reed), Focus on the Family (Minnery), Liberty University (Staver) and the Southern Baptist Convention (Land) examples of “Religious Right,” and identifying keeping families together, reforming the visa system and securing the border as goals of “immigration reform.”

Well the Southern Baptists are the most Christian right of the Christian right, which is the most right of all the right, but I didn’t see much of anything of substance in the article to prove that the conservative base has embraced immigration, at least from the left’s perspective.

I’ll wait for better articles before I get too excited.

No excuses. The mexican government can try to brow beat and guilt-trip Christians all they want, but if they can’t get their own house in order, then don’t expect the illegals to get any help from US citizens. We are not the safety valve, nor the welfare office for mexico. And to the people exploiting illegal workers, watch out, you will be targeted. We have had enough of this, and you will pay the consequences. Tit for tat mexico, if you want to flood El Norte with your unwanted, you really don’t want a bunch of pissed off Americans invading mexico to regain what we have lost.

The socialist fascist can have their amnesty for the 33 million plus illegals who broke into this Nation, if the violators cannot vote for more than 25 years as a punishment for breaking our laws.

..................crickets chirping....................

The silence tells you everything you need to know about this amnesty push for the illegal Mexicans in this Country! These are nothing more or less than future socialist fascist voters the moochers party needs to stay in power!

Nothing left to say!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Eight Deuce on the loose!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Keep families together by sending the illegals home. I’m tired of my country being a dumping ground for the third world.

A popular libertarian leaning drive-home AM talk show host in New Mexico is practically chortling that this article “proves” that the Christian Right is solidly aligned with “immigration reform” aka amnesty, so we might as well just smell the coffee and get with the program.

OMG!!! How many years have I been telling you that Ralph Reed is one of Grover Norquist/Rove’s puppets!!!! HERE is your proof! The Christian right is falling for the same nonsense that the minorities fall for witht he democrats!

You’ve got to be smarter than to swallow the Ralph Reed lies...he doesn’t care about GOD or FAMILY, he cares about Ralph REED and has had enough shady deals to be in prison!

Where you find Norquist, you find Rove, and Ralph Reed, and usually Newt Gingrich. ALL AMNESTY lovers!
Norquist and his cabal are who destroyed prop. 187 in Calif. and weakened the 1986 amnesty bill. He’s a muslim convert who cares nothing about USA sovereignty. His anti tax regurgitation is just to hook you!

THEY are NOT conservatives! STop buying their lie!

keeping families together? They can stay together as they leave, nobody denies them that.

visa system? We have tens of millions crossing the border without a visa, this has nothing to do with a visa system

secure the border?... and who exactly will do that??

In the first place, there is no evangelical hierarchy, and no evangelical leader has the right to speak for all evangelicals on a matter such as this.
What we have here is a group of evangelical elitists (with a George Soros connection) promoting a disastrous agenda. They are distorting the words of Christ to do so.
There is a recent article on this topic on the informative VDARE.COM website, which we are not allowed to link here on Free Republic. However, if you go to that website, you can scroll down and find it.
