After Ron Paul, What Now For Libertarians?
New York Times ^ | Brian Doherty

Posted on 02/09/2013 2:39:36 PM PST by JohnPDuncan

RON PAUL, Republican of Texas, has retired from the House, after winning more than two million presidential primary votes in 2012. He took the party’s libertarian wing from ignorable fringe to significant faction. His son, Senator Rand Paul, Republican of Kentucky, is angling to lead that faction, very possibly as a presidential candidate himself.

The libertarian wing’s dissatisfaction with Mitt Romney led the Libertarian Party to earn 1.2 million votes in the presidential election for its candidate, the former New Mexico governor (and former Republican) Gary Johnson. That was its largest vote total ever. In at least seven national House and Senate races a Libertarian beat the spread between a winning Democrat and a losing Republican. From the Republican point of view, losing the libertarians can mean losing elections.

“There’s a whole swath of people not getting adequate attention from Republicans or Democrats,” Senator Paul told me recently. These are independent voters who want to seriously cut government spending the way the Tea Party faction does but who also want a “foreign policy more of defense and less offense,” as Senator Paul put it, and a “more socially tolerant attitude.”

yep, we’re not having any more of YOUR crappy candidates like Dole, McCain, Romney and Bush (medicare Part D, No child left behind, trillion dollar war and financial collapse). They do more to harm the GOP than anything WE could possibly do.

Did you listen to his speech at Heritage? it’s easy to find, look it up. He says you can defeat radical islam without being all over the place. This will be a different strategy simply because the nation is bankrupt and so defense has to be cut and made to be smarter otherwise there will be no defense when the collapse happens and we will really be exposed then won’t we?

“I was a registered republican for over 35 years. During the fiscal cliff nonsense I finally dropped my registration and joinEd the Libertarisn party. “

I was a registered Republican since I registered in college. Last month, I completed my switch to independent.

I didn’t leave the Republican Party. It left me. See tag line.

You are cruising for a zot, you know that? This rhetoric about the 10th is the same liberal double-talk his father and all other liberaltarians used in supporting abortion.

Are you pro-abortion? Pro-gay marriage? If not, then you support any FedGov efforts to keep abortion and queer marriages out. Period.

I dropped my republican affiliation. I am interested in anyone who is conservative or libertarian.

The states have many rights. Destroying cultural institutions that have been around for generation upon generation is not one of them.

We stayed home like the millions of others who will not vote for a big government conservative like Romney. Not a chance!

And if you try and do that again you can have another
Democrat president.

“Conservatism argues that the more morality we have in America, the closer we will be to the true vision of the Founders.”

We had plenty of immoral founders. About as many as we have today. Just read an Adams bio.

Libertarianism? Sure. They didn’t want the government telling them how to live their lives. I don’t either.

If someone wants to be a drunk, their body, their call. I will choose differently.
Drugs? Their body, their call. I will choose differently.
Legislate what happens in the privacy of someone’s bedroom? Sorry, not interested.

Oh dear lord. I support a LIFE AT CONCEPTION ACT, which would define life at conception and which the Supreme Court can’t do squat about because Congress says so. Shame your dream candidate Bush, your Republican House and Senate in 2003-2007 did absolutely nothing to stop abortions. As I said, you have failed and now if you don’t embrace Rand we will give you another Democrat president for eternity.

Abortion is flat-out unconstitutional anyway. I don’t care what some hack court said.

I did read the heritage speech and it left me with more questions than answers.

BTW The fact that Ron Paul supporters are lining up behind him and using Ron's loony arguments in support if Rand's candidacy gives me pause... Kind of like the old saying..With friends like that who needs enemies..

MARRIAGE DOES NOT TAKE PLACE IN A FREAKIN’ BEDROOM!

This is why Paultards get annoying really fast. Why the hell aren’t you over at The Daily Paul?

The states under the 10th amendment can do what they want. Prohibition of drugs and a definition of marriage are not in the constitution, so there.

Sorry Charlie, once your kids are adults, they make their own decisions. You often do not agree. It remains their decision.

I did not say it did. You may benefit from breathing...

I’m not a Ron Paul supporter and have never been. As an aside, you seem to be wound a bit tight...

The Daily Paul don’t like Rand and I’m at FreeRepublic to spread the message... do you not welcome TRUE conservatives?

Sure, try and kick us out the GOP or deny us Rand Paul and you can have another Democrat president.
