When I was in high school a guy and his girl got caught in this mostly stupid law.
He had just turned 18, she was just 16, the father (of the girl) caught them together.
The guy was charged and forever tagged as sexual predator, spent time in jail....when she turned 18, they got married.
I get the laws but good lord some common sense should be applied.
This where an informed jury is supposed to nullify the law.
But we don't like informed juries in this country. They are bad for the re-election chances of so many judges and DA's.

common sense: wait until you are 18
My oldest son got his girl friend pregnant when she was 15 years old. Her father went to the police to try to have him arrested for statutory rape, he gave up on the idea when the cops pointed out to him that my son was 4 months younger than his daughter.
A side note to this story:
My wife and I encouraged her to have the baby and we would take it and raise it, or support her and the baby, she was for it but her father was not and forced her to get an abortion. Yes, I said forced.
My grand child would have been 24 years old this year. The g/friend’s father died 2 years ago. When I heard the news, I immediately thought, that he was having to answer some very serious questions.
Their family was Catholic and we’re not. I went to Catholic family services, they even sent a Priest to his house to talk to him. It did no good at all. The girl could have moved in with us.
Sorry for the long reply, I have to unload this once in a while.
i was in a jury pool a few years back - a young black man - probably 18 was charged with statutory rape of a “child” - pretrial case info delivered by the atty stated the girl was 1 week from being “legal” - the pool groaned in unison - why it even came to trial amazed us- all - it was quickly thrown out once everyone on the pool was seated
I bet family get-togethers with the in-laws were tense.
If common sense could not be used to begin with; a law will only make things worse as the language is twisted and skewed to suit the needs of the moment, and as such should be killed immediately.
Like anything to do with gov’t, it is best not to give them any more power than they already have stole/usurped. Give an inch, take a mile.
