Dorner manhunt: Charred human remains found in burned cabin
Los Angeles Times ^ | Feb. 13, 2013 | Andrew Blankstein & others

Charred human remains have been found in the burned cabin where police believe fugitive ex-cop Christopher Dorner was holed up after trading gunfire with law enforcement, authorities said.

If the body is identified to be Dorner’s, the standoff would end a weeklong manhunt for the ex-LAPD officer and Navy Reserve lieutenant who is believed to be responsible for a string of revenge-fueled shootings following his firing by the Los Angeles Police Department several years ago. Four people have died, allegedly at Dorner’s hands.

-- Are we sure the charred body wasn't a newspaper delivery woman, Korean greengrocer or the owner of a Subaru Brat? --

We do know that the LAPD is NOT sure it is Dorner. They have continued the protective details, because they are not sure Dorner is dead.

San Bernardino Sheriffs Department is holding a press conference in about 3.5 hours —

We will probably get a firm identification then.

The LAPD owes them 1,000,000 bucks. He has been captured and convicted. Hell, I can argue that case and I am just a RADAR guy.

First Dorner was one sick guy.

While, what is known about him should have lead to a fairly rapid conviction and death sentence in a criminal court; I have some reservations about how the police handled this.

This morning on a local talk radio show, they played some police scanner recordings where the police talked about sending in the “burner.” What I heard makes it sound very much like the police decided to deliberately burn down the house around him for either the purpose of killing him, causing him to commit suicide, or smoking him out so they could shoot him as he left the building.

There is such a thing as due process. Police are not suppose to be judge, jury and executioners all rolled into one.

Dorner was evil. Capturing him alive was probably a low probability event. However, I suspect that history will judge the police of Southern California pretty harshly on this one.

I just finished watching the funeral for Officer Michael Crain..34 years old, leaves behind a wife, a 10 year old son and a 4 year old daughter..he was a husband, a father, a son, a brother..and a marine who served two duties in Kuwait..THIS is a hero..a wonderful man snuffed out by a scum bag..I want anyone to see that funeral and call Dorner a hero..Dorner is NO hero..he lived his life as a coward and died like one..Crain is a real hero

Don’t matter to my knowledge (except the cops look even worse) as the death occurred in the commission of a crime so he would be legally responsible. He shooting at LEO’s would be the crime.

Looks like the same thing could have been done here, especially by cutting off his water, gas, and electricity.

The cabin didn't have any water, gas, or electricity or telephone service.

It is my understanding that “burner” is slang for tear gas. I thought it was also reported that there was a single gunshot about the time the tear gas was thrown into the window. I assume this gun shot was Dorner opting out.

I don’t care how crazy you are, if you are the occupant of a small cabin and it’s starting to burn then you will run out (unless you are already dead) I think the argument can be made that they tried to burn, or smoke Dorner out. I don’t know if that is a huge deal.

I don’t think it’s fair to say Dorner was murdered or that they were even trying to murder him.

This had gone on too long and they needed to contain him.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe either of you equate "cop hater" with murderer. If you do find equivalence, that is essentially asserting that hating the cops is a capital offense.

And compounding what your words actually say, some of the people that you may be labeling as "cop haters" don;t hate cops, they simply don't trust cops, and/or don't respect them. IOW, no animosity there. Is that a capital offense too?

It was in his second wallet too since his other wallet was found near the Mexican border a few days ago.

The police will probably say that fire just like tear gas is intended to smoke him out where they could take him into custody. The fact that he chose not to come out was his choice.

The only other choice would be to go in after him and give him a chance to kill some more people. It was a slam dunk in that respect.

How were they so sure he had nobody in the cabin with him? Of course they may not of cared.

Remember what we did to Noriega in Panama. He was holed up in his palace and we waited him out.

Wasn't his palace- it was the Papal Nuncio (diplomatic outpost of the Vatican). We couldn't really just storm the place. :-)

Judge Feess should revive the consent decree. There are too many public, overt instances of unprofessional acts on the part of the LAPD. When the consent decree, putting the LAPD under Federal management, was lifted, even the LA Times thought it was premature. The remedy to prevent further chaos and loss of innocent life, and probably property, is to bring back the consent decree. And the Court clearly and specifically retained jurisdiction when the decree was lifted.
If anyone is really concerned about Lt. Dorners War, they should write a letter to Judge Feess from the United States District Court for the Central District of California. The letter, if there is one, should come from a person residing in the Central District and request a hearing to investigate the LAPD and decide if the consent decree should be reimposed, cite specific publicly known acts of the LAPD,the illegality of these acts and the harm and injury suffered as a result of these acts. I helped an Native American(one of the poorest, uneducated drunken, Vietnam Veterans you could imagine, and my blood brother), write a letter to a Federal Judge. And we got an amazing letter in return. While the Judge is a liberal, he wrote an impeccable, articulate, reasoned response that was totally consistent with his role of Judge and gave us legal reasoning, not advice of course, that was flat out great.
Someone that writes such a letter, might post it, and send to an attorney or other fiduciary, after mailing just so the LAPD does not blast and burn his azz to ashes, of course.
