Jodi Hernandez reports on the cosmic close encounter that the earth is experiencing tonight and the real one Russia experienced this morning.
On a day that had a lot of people talking about meteorites and asteroids, a fireball of some sort was seen streaking across the Bay Area skies.
The fireball was seen around 7:45 p.m.
There are reports into the newsroom from people as far north as Fairfield and as far south as Gilroy. It was also seen in Sacramento, Newark, Walnut Creek, and St. Helena.
It was bluish in color and appeared to be heading straight to the ground, according to one viewer in Santa Clara.
"I saw that meteor/fireball over Solano County after spending the day reporting on asteroids and fireballs," said NBC Bay Area reporter Jodi Hernandez.
Candice Guruwaiya told us on Facebook she saw it in San Jose. "I was leaving Safeway on Branham and Snell when I saw it. It looked like it was headed for the Capital Auto Mall area. It was a bright green when it first appeared, then it went to a bright yellow. It was awesome!" Guruwaiya posted.
Gina Johnson also saw it in San Jose. She also posted on our Facebook page that she had just walked out of a Fresh and Easy in San Jose's Willow Glen neighborhood. "It looked just like the one I saw back in October except it was a little smaller. It was greenish in color just like the one on October. Everyone in the parking lot stopped and looked at it," Johnson posted

Dont fret. The chances of your plane being hit by a meteor are probably about the same as being attacked by a shark in the Detroit River.
You dont have much to worry about; these (meaning the West Coast Fireball, not the Russian one) are fairly routine. However they are going to get much more media attention and are much more likely to be posted on FR from now on, which inevitably will lead to the impression that there are suddenly a lot more of them.
Yep. Now every time someone sees a shooting star or fireball and captures it on video, uploads it to YouTube, it will be BREAKING NEWS on Fox, CNN, etc. and even here perhaps. People will say Why all of a sudden are there all these meteors? when these actually happen all the time, not the one in Russia per se, but even that type of event, while rare in over the course of a human lifetime, is not really all that rare on a cosmic scale.
And speaking of sharks, I am reminded of this:
WHAT! Bawney Fwank was in san fran?
There was one in Texas a few years ago on a Sunday morning. If I had looked out the church windows, I might have seen it that day.
Most estimates were the original size was eight to ten feet across. Someone found the crater and a marble sized iron meteorite.
Comments at that ‘Cracked’ link are hysterical...got to love the pic of the guy with a short sleeved shirt and SANDALS standing in the snow and cold...

Yeah, right. Last night Foxnews gave the Russian meteor maybe 10 seconds, tops. CNN and MSNBC ignored it completely. As for the asteroid that passed so close, all three networks completely ignored it. They had “important” stuff to talk about, like how bad it smelled on that cruise ship. If you had watched those networks last night, you would never have known about the Russian meteor.
Although it is very tempting I’m going to resist the obvious post here!!!
I’m listening to CBS radio ... they had a program playing Depression-era dance music, but just broke in and announced something about explosions (possible volcanic activity?) on Mars.
I wonder if it’s related ...
Really? Then you must not have been watching the same Fox News and CNN I was last night (I never watch MSNBC BTW, not even for a millisecond). Yea the Carnival cruise ship got a lot of coverage, more than it deserved IMO, but I saw several stories, a lot more than 10 seconds worth, that covered both the Russian meteor and the close passing of the meteor video clips and some interviews with witnesses and some scientists. And they were still covering the story this morning.
“Videos of Russians laughing at or ignoring the meteor (bad language):
Ivanova, deadpan, “Yessir, a meteor, yay high.”
That won't last long. In general, the public's 'popularity' trend is only good for two weeks.
Well, out 'internet' would certainly change.

Let’s hope so.
Clever...how many will get it?
Kind of like this
12 I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake. The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red, 13 and the stars in the sky fell to earth, as figs drop from a fig tree when shaken by a strong wind. 14 The heavens receded like a scroll being rolled up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place.
10 The third angel sounded his trumpet, and a great star, blazing like a torch, fell from the sky on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water 11 the name of the star is Wormwood.[a] A third of the waters turned bitter, and many people died from the waters that had become bitter.
