Obama's quiet ally: Who's behind gun control bill no one is talking about

As President Obama comes to Chicago to talk gun control, Illinois' Republican senator, Mark Kirk, is pushing a bill to target gun trafficking. It's under the radar, but could have a greater impact than other bills.

As President Obama pushes for gun control in Chicago Friday, an unexpected ally from his home state, Sen. Mark Kirk (R) of Illinois, is crossing party lines to propose legislation that could have a greater impact than higher-profile proposals to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, experts say.

Senator Kirk and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D) of New York introduced the bill, which targets gun trafficking, last week.

The bill defines gun trafficking as a crime. It focuses on organized crime, cartels, and street gangs, and makes it illegal to purchase, sell, or transfer more than one firearm to someone – or on the behalf of someone – who could be reasonably expected to use it in a crime. Gun shop owners who knowingly facilitate such purchases would also be liable. Maximum penalties are 20 years in prison.

“Kirk’s take is really interesting, no one else is talking about that,” says Wayne Steger, a political scientist at DePaul University in Chicago. “Gun running across state borders and selling to unlicensed and unregistered people is the big problem.”

According to the University of Chicago Crime Lab, which researches gun violence and crime policy, the majority of guns confiscated or used in crimes in Chicago were purchased outside the city limits. The top source states for firearms recovered in Chicago include Indiana, Mississippi, Kentucky, Alabama, and Texas. These states either have weaker gun laws or are historically connected to Chicago over generations, with families residing in both areas.

I have the unfortunate luck to live in Illinois. Since Congress supposedly listens to it’s constituents, I wrote a long email to Sen. Kirk urging him to not take away our 2nd ammendment rights, especially since our govt. is giving terrorists guns.

Not sure if it will help, but I couldn’t not try.....

I was in a store this week that sells gun and ammo, a mob scene. The people are preparing for battle. Rationed ammo, if you can find it, and out of stock routine weapons - it is amazing that the government says nothing but ban ban ban. I am surprised they do not try to calm people down. These customers are in a bad mood, have had enough. I have been in countries prior to and during outbreak of armed hostilities: this is what happens prior to the bad times.

In Houston, there are fully armed Apache helicopter gunships cruising up and down the I-10 Katy Freeway at rush hour. The Fedgov is being highly provocative in Houston.

The Zetas are also here now , in a big way, being escorted across town by City of Houston Police cars, cops on the take, with narcotrafficantes running four main businesses through Houston: drug transit and sales, illegals smuggling, gun and cash running, and protection/extortion rackets. I think the narcotrafficantes are also behind the rampant car burglary (all over town) and increased house burglary - society here is quietly disintegrating into lawlessness. Almost everyone I know is armed 100% of the time for self protection. A 4 am prowler tried to kick in my 28 year old daughter’s apartment door last week, Hispanic with no shirt on in 50 degree weather in the dark, a predator, taken away by the police. Now she is ready if he returns, with a big shotgun, and a nice new 9mm, following shooting instruction and CHL class.

People here will retain the creator endowed RTKBA no matter what laws the communist politburo promulgates or decrees.

Supported by Rove’s Conservative Victory Project, no doubt.

Most of the time that Sen. Kirk was a congressman, I lived in his district. His rating from Gun Owners of America is usually 0%, and his rating from Planned Parenthood is usually 100%. He frequently votes for unconstitutional pork barrel spending.

Will he have a conservative primary opponent, in 2016? I hope that he’ll lose his primary to someone who agrees with most of the republican platform.

Excuse me, but shouldn’t the Dear Liar and his Fast & Furious; Guns for Gangsters operation be the first prosecution under such a law?

Gun shop owners who knowingly facilitate such purchases would also be liable. Maximum penalties are 20 years in prison.

What about lying wannabe Emperors that did far worse?

The irony, of course, is that Barry and the Illinois Democratic machine are already lining up an opponent for Kirk in 2016, and the whisper campaign (that he isn’t up to the job, due to the stroke he suffered last year) is already underway.

If Kirk thinks this bill will preserve his Senate career, he is sadly mistaken.

“The top source states for firearms recovered in Chicago include Indiana, Mississippi, Kentucky, Alabama, and Texas.”

Sooo, if Chicago could get every gun out of Texas, there wouldn't be any more from Texas going to Chicago and less people would be killed in Chicago. Really, that's what liberals will think. Those Chicago people are dead due to Texas, Indiana, Mississippi, Kentucky and Alabama.

Sometimes, I think the US is full of the mentally unhinged.
