House overrides Obama, votes to freeze federal pay for third straight year

The House voted Friday to freeze the pay of federal workers for the third year in a row over the objections of congressional Democrats and the Obama administration.

Members voted 261-154 in favor of the bill, which would also lock in a pay freeze for members of Congress. It exempts people serving in the military.

The bill won significant support from Democrats — 43 voted for it — while 10 Republicans voted against it.

The legislation is an attempt to override President Obama’s executive order in December that seeks to give federal workers a 0.5 percent pay hike in late March. That order incensed congressional Republicans, who criticized it as an attempt to seize control of an issue that has traditionally been under Congress’s purview.

The only reason 0bama has opened his candy store with ‘free’ signs on every item is because he knows the Republicans will block most of it then the DNC can USE IT AS AMMO AGAINST THEM in the 2014 Congressional races. That is the ONLY reason 0bama’s SOTU speech was a ‘clearing house give away’ speech. 0BAMA IS 100% POLITICS, ALL THE TIME.. EVEN DURING BENGHAZI; SPARING THE LIVES OF AMERICANS TO PROTECT HIS RE-ELECTION CAMPAIGN.

i know of people in the private sector who have had to settle for paycuts—why should federal employees get increases?

Republican nay votes:

Bishop (UT), Brooks (AL), Forbes, King (NY), LoBiondo, Marino, Rigell, Smith (NJ), Wittman,
Wolf
Not voting: Culberson, Schock, Youmg (Alaska).

Wolf has a whole lot of fed workers, and Wittman too.
Doesn’t seem like the other two Va congressmen (roughly general Norfolk area) would care all that much but they have quite a few fed workers.

Let them live like SS recipients and federal and postal retirees have to. we didn’t get a COLA for 3 yrs once Obama got in office. Then we got a COLA in 2012 with the 2012 election coming up and another smaller one for 2013.

NO gov’t employee should make more than the average Citizen. That, and the ‘generous’ benefits frost my chaps even more. They need reminding they work for US.

Key phrase:
which would also lock in a pay freeze for members of Congress.

Somebody's waking up to the fact that people who are struggling to make ends meet are getting sick of watching congress vote themselves raises.

What’s going on with Culberson? He’s been on the spending side with Democrats recently and this time he was too big a chicken to even bother to vote. None of them should ever be allowed to leave the chambers until they vote yeah or nay.

Good for them. Now we need a Republican Senate to do the same.

This is a common myth. Gov't workers generally make less. The gov't system is fixed so you can be at one grade for years with no possibility of getting promoted. Benefits are the same as civilian companies because they use the same vendors, Blue Cross, Humana, etc. There are some jobs with no civilian equivalents.

Whenever they post gov't average salaries they tend to use data from the DC area which is way higher because of the higher cost of living.

You hear stories and believe them without researching. Many of the Washington bureaucrats are top-end in the pay/perks, but the average DOD employee is comparable to the private sector and has similar benefits - healthcare is not free and the main benefit is a 5% match on TSP/Retirement contributions. The average government employee has fallen 36% behind compared to those in the private sector over the last 4 years. Those in DOD do jobs necessary for the military and more cheaply than if they were all staffed by active duty military. They have had no cost of living raise for a couple years and if the sequestration furloughs occur, will lose an additional 5% of their pay this year. They feel the pain the same as you and this BS about them all being in hog heaven with huge paychecks and super benefits is just another wedge to divide another sector of the People. They are the same as those in the private sector and have the same bills to pay and have to make the same decisions when pay vs. bills becomes an issue. They aren't insulated as so many seem to think.
