Now, on another matter: I have on camo, hunting boots. Do I qualify? :-)

THE OTHER SIDE OF BILLY JOEL

In 2001, Billy Joel wrote down his solo piano works with the help of Richard Hyung-ki Joo and a few other professionals. The publication of “Fantasies and Delusions” in 2001 marked a change for one of America’s great showmen. The sheet music was issued with a copy of the famous Schirmer edition cover used for Chopin and other classical composers. This was an indication that Joel wanted to be taken seriously. So was the fact that at the beginning of each piece, he used “William Joel” rather than his usual “Billy”. Richard Joo recorded the pieces that year for Sony, and it’s a fine disk.

Chopin or Rachmaninov he’s not. Put on a Joel piece, and you’re delighted at what you hear, but if you put on a Chopin piece afterward, you don’t place Joel at the same level. Don’t worry, though. It’s good music in its own right.

This video is Billy Joel introducing Richard Joo, who first plays “Uptown Girl” as Mozart would have written it and then segues into Joel’s Invention in C minor, written in the style of Bach. Joel and Joo then collaborate on a two-piano version of his Air in C.

Joel: Invention in C minor, Op. 6; Air in C Major (“Dublinesque”), Op. 10

William Joel, as I’ll call him for this effort, published ten pieces in 2001, but only six of them made it to YouTube, along with one movement of a seventh three-movement piece. His classical piano disk apparently didn’t make all that much of a splash, which shouldn’t be a surprise. Elvis Costello collaborated with the Brodsky Quartet in 1994 in a song cycle titled “The Juliet Letters”, which is a fine work but didn’t receive the kind of coverage Costello’s other music got. Crossover attempts are fraught with risk. This waltz, one of three composed by Joel, is influenced by Chopin, Debussy, Joplin and Richard Rodgers.

Joel: Waltz #1 in G Major (“Nunley’s Carousel”), Op. 2

William Joel tries his hand at large pieces in this disk. He has a reasonable grasp of development, but he can’t seem to write something in sonata format. No matter. Neither could Scott Joplin. There are hints of Grieg, Schumann, Debussy, Satie and Rachmaninov here.

Joel: Reverie (“Villa d'Este”), Op. 3

William Joel has a style that derives heavily from other composers, which means they are influences on his work. It’s hard to listen to a Joel piece and say, “Oh, that’s Joel!” In other words, he hasn’t as yet formed a personal style. That comes with musical maturity. Early Beethoven pieces are heavily indebted to Haydn and Mozart, particularly the chamber works, so there is no shame in this. Give him time. This sounds a bit like Debussy, Rachmaninov and Scriabin, thrown together with movie composer Bernard Hermann.

Joel: Fantasy (“Film Noir”), Op. 4

Connie: "Jack Costanzo - Feeling Alright": Yes, this is the same "Feeling Alright" by The Beatles and Joe Cocker, to name only two who have released this song. This version most closely follows the Joe Cocker version but of course, with much percussion. Or you could choose "Jack Costanzo - Sing Sing Sing ( Scorching The Skins )" ( Scorching The Drums ): Yes, this is the same "Sing Sing Sing" as Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey, among others but with added percussion. Either selection is 'knock-your-socks-off' GOOD! :-)
