Wolfgang Sawallisch, 1923-2013 (conductor)

Wolfgang Sawallisch has died, Der Spiegel reports. The Philadelphia Orchestra's music director from 1993-2003 was 89.

Sawallisch died Friday, according to the Bavarian State Opera, which Sawallisch led for 20 years. He had been stricken in recent years by a number of diseases and conditions.

In the later years of his tenure with the Philly Orchestra, he was there seldomly. It was a real treat to hear the orchestra play with him at the helm. He had an understated style, but under his leadership, the orchestra played musically with a heightened sense of ensemble. It was clear the musicians held him in the highest regard and they played their best for him.

His Wikipedia biography starts at age 23. Seems to be hiding what he did during the previous 5 years.
