My mother died 8 years ago and still said colored. My mother was a racist in many ways especially when she talked to the TV.

However, she was a lead lady in wire processing, she took the new employees, mostly black, due to affirmative action and government contracts, under the wing and taught each of them the job until they got it and were self sufficient. She spoke fondly of each of them and often stayed without pay.

She never saw the dissonance between her spoken views and her actual behavior with her co-workers.

When she retired many of them brought her personal gifts.

I worked with a guy whose parents were Italians working in Ethiopia. BTW he was white. He was the on;y person where I worked who could actually claim he was African-American. He shut up some whiners at a couple of meetings I was at by asking them what they thought he was.

Doesn’t matter for me if they ask race because I refuse to answer it. I am white, but, on forms, I usually check
“other”. Sometimes, I write “human”.

When we filled in our census forms last time, I gave my name, my sex, and my age only. Nobody pestered us about it.

But I’ll still be called a “Caucasian” right?

Nope. Whitey, honky, or cracka.

No good can come from the government taking note of race or ethnicity.

&&&
Ah, but you miss the point; goodness is not their goal. They thrive on dividing us and putting us at each others’ throats.

It’s an old Virginia (and NC) name going back to the 17th century, several by that name served in the Revolutionary War. One Richard Taliaferro served under Joseph Winston at Guilford Courthouse along with my fourth and fifth great grandfathers, who were neighbors of Winston. Taliaferro died and was buried there. It’s an honorable name. Too bad it sounds as if the fellow you describe doesn’t live up to it, but that happens sometimes.

In my corner of the white world, MD in the 1950s and 1960s, I was taught to say “colored” as a polite term. “Negro” was also used and not considered racist at the time, but “colored” was considered better. Calling someone “black” was definitely considered rude until the “Black is Beautiful” movement of the late 1960s

Where I was from it was the opposite (at least in the 60’s when I was kid). Using spade would get you in a fight at school, but using darkie wouldn’t, and seemed to be preferred to negro or colored. I guess it’s all about locale.

No, I replaced it with American-American. When the Census lady called, I informed her that both my parents were American so I was American-American. If one of my parents would have been Spanish, I would have been American-Spanish. After a few more examples, she hung up on me.

Others here could give you a better response but I'd be careful with divulging too much personal info.

I guess it started with the 1787 3/5 compromise. The South wanted to count its slaves in the tally in order to get a bigger share of congresscritters. Northern states didn't think it was right for the south to get extra congresscritters when a lot of the people being counted weren't even free, and saw the institution of slavery as a national embarassment that must not be encouraged. If the south gathered additional power by counting slaves it would have more votes in congress for the creation of even more slave states. So while a lot of blacks get outraged by being the idea of "being considered 3/5 of a person" the reason wasn't to demean them but rather, to limit the spread of slavery and still keep the states from breaking apart.

I know early census were pretty vague, usually listing by name just the head of houshold and tallying spouse, relatives and slaves generically by age group. After listing everyone by age group there might be a note saying "two are slaves" or some such thing but it's anyone's guess who was who.

Later census records became more specific because it was politicized.

That’s why I refuse to answer that question. And if they’re stupid enough to think a German surname is anything but Caucasian, then screw ‘em.
