Sen. Rand Paul's puzzling vote for Chuck Hagel: Smart politics?

"And so the epic battle over Chuck Hagel's nomination to become defense secretary ended with a whimper, not a bang. The Senate easily confirmed the former Republican senator from Nebraska on Tuesday, 58 to 41, with four Republicans joining all present Democrats. That was still by far the least amount of support a successful defense secretary nominee has received since at least the Carter administration, and confirmation came only after one successful GOP filibuster and, on Tuesday, an unsuccessful follow-up. For anyone who's been paying attention to the Hagel drama for the past few weeks, the outcome was no surprise.

Spectators may have noticed one unexpected wrinkle to the Hagel denouement, however: Sen. Rand Paul. Fifteen Republicans voted on Tuesday morning to end the filibuster against Hagel but then went on to oppose his confirmation. Only one, the junior senator from Kentucky, voted the other way: Paul was one of the 27 Republicans who voted to continue the filibuster, but then he surprised just about everyone by joining the "aye" Republicans — Thad Cochran (Miss.), Mike Johanns (Neb.), and Richard Shelby (Ala.) — for the final vote.

The Repubicans in the US Senate did little more than put on a show with the Hagel nomination and knew for the entire time that Hagel would win confirmation.

In Washington, the Democrats are the Globetrotters and the Republicans are the Washington Generals. Before each game, they all know who will be victorious.

The game is only played by the Republicans as a means to extract cash from the Washington Generals fans and they would be the Republican voters.

True ~ nothing at all surprising about the Paul vote.

Does anyone here remember the opthamologic surgeon the FBI picked up years ago for murdering Jews who had had their eye color changed?

He even worked for the FBI.

Just goes to show education isn't everything when it comes to haters.

He says the right things most of the time but you can not rely on him for anything.

Couldn’t have said it better; this choice was a mistake that will come back to bite America on the *ss.

Rand Paul rattled cages.......in the end did what he was told.
What’s puzzling about that?
He is all talk and no action.

"I've said all along that I give the president some prerogative in choosing his political appointees." In other words, it's about the principle, not the man. "There are many things I disagree with Chuck Hagel on, there are many things I disagree with John Kerry on, there are very few things I agree with the president on, but the president gets to choose political appointees."

So why have congressional checks and balances and oversight then? Why have a confirmation hearing proceess, a cloture and a chamber vote? Why put the nation thru another round of kabuki theater?

Paul's rationale here is a classic exampe of the Achilles heel of libertarian thought process. Principle trumps everything, even in the light of overwhelming evidence to push back and force the executive branch to bend.

This is why Libertarians, as a party, will NEVER be in a position of power. Full blown Libertarians are nothing more than boisterous 'principled' spectators who have no problem embracing and engaging in the unprincipled and immoral aspects of liberalism while they wave the Constitution in their left hand. They really stand for NOTHING. Rand Paul just let the conservative mask slip off his face to reveal his true features.

Amen, amen and amen!

Paul’s a joke. Talks big and folds when the SHTF. Part of the GOP death spiral.

If all the senate does is rubber stamp any and all nominees by the admin
(Which they don’t with Republican nominees),
Why waste everyone’s time with hearings?
Total kabuki theatre.

When conservatives wake up and see the republican party is chasing the democrats to the left, and won’t stop moving left until they see we refuse to follow, nothing will change. If we keep letting them drive the train, we will end up where THEY want us: right behind the left. They forced their guy down our throat and gave us a choice of romney or obamb. That was no choice for many conservative, hence we lost. We are like the girl who will keep taking her cheating boyfriend back. Unfortunately I voted for romney and will never do that again. I did not trust him, did not like the things he DID (not be be confused with what he said when he was running for president) He went against everything I believed in but I knew had I not voted for him, would have been blamed for Obama by my husband and many here for years.
If a third party doesn’t rise up in the next year or so, we can forget the constitution and living free. We will be owned by the government.

Who is John Galt?

Not what I expected, but few things coming out of DC are these days.

To his credit, Rand Paul helped the low information voting world get to know a bit more about Hagel and by extension, the obama plan.

Interesting show and also interesting he chose not to continue fighting for that hill.

Things in a poker game often aren't what they seem to be. Did he get what he was after? I wonder what political capital he thought it would cost or what he would gain, but whatever the calculation, he walked away.

Beck will make an excuse for his boy Junior Paul. Beck fancies himself as a “libertarian” but says old man Paul’s views are too extreme, but he says little junior Paul is his “kind of libertarian”. News flash for Beck. Ron Paul supporters can’t stand the boy, and his caving into the Marxist will not mean squat with them. They know he’s a phoney, who can’t be trusted. As a matter of fact he can’t be trusted with any thing. He has no core.

The President gets to nominate. The Senate gets to approve. There is nothing in the Constitution that requires the Senate to act as the President’s lap dog, and there are decades of precent of Democrat Senators blocking nominations made by Republican Presidents. After the fact excuse making by complicit, self-serving politicians.

Agree with your assessment but consider this. The SecDef, whoever he or she may be, is going to administer the Pentagon according to the ideology set out by the President. Hagel is unfit in my view given my beliefs, yet would we take him over Bill Ayers or Dennis Kucinich for the job?
