Animal Obesity A Growing Problem In The US
CBS ^ | 26 February 2013

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Much like their human owners, animals have to deal with unwanted weight, too.

KCAL9’s Sibila Vargas reported that animal obesity is an epidemic across the country with more than 50 percent of pets now overweight.

Natasha, who owns an adorable dog named Colonel, said she knows her furry friend has overindulged in food.

“Every time he goes up the stairs, he expects a treat. You spoil them and then you don’t realize what you’re doing,” she said.

For the past few months, Natasha has been working with Dr. Jeff Werber, a Los Angeles veterinarian, to help her dog lose those stubborn extra pounds.

Werber said cutting calories is the key.

“If you looked at the calorie content of those treats, it would comprise probably one of their two meals. So by doing this on a daily basis, giving them 30, 40 percent more calories than they need, you can imagine what’s gonna happen after a few years,” he said.

To figure out if a pet is on the heavy side, Werber said, “You want to see an indentation in the waist. When you see them like a box, that’s too big, it’s like a coffee table. Likewise, if you can grab too much skin, it’s too much. You want to be able to feel the ribs, not see them, but feel them.”

I guess CBS was running out of news story material. That article is a sign of desperation...lol

Here’s a news article you can run, “Signs everywhere that Obama is going to be impeached during this presidency” or “Why do flies love Obama?” that would increase your readership at least 50%

Michelle has plenty of junk in her trunk and shouldnt talk.

This is good one for Bloomberg who just outlawed large bottles of soda from being sold by certain types of food stores. Come on Bloomy, your city dogs are getting fat. Fix it.

A lot of dog owners think they’re giving good treatment to their animals by plumping them up on table scraps, etc. All they’re doing is fast-tracking them to an early death.

I don’t think packaged pet food has even existed for much more than 100 years. At this point, packaged pet food is like “Chinese roulette”.

Cats were never meant to be inside animals....they have claws and hunting abilities for a reason. Now, they are stuck inside small apt.s never walking on grass or climbing trees. They get very little exercise.

Are animals sitting on their asses all day playing video games while eating boxes of Zingers?

My neighbor is a really good runner, very fit - she wins ALL the local races and beats nearly all the men. They have a fat, fat young dog she walks half a block to poop and he never romps with their children, who are pretty active.

Whereas I am definitely a walker not a runner, but our dog walks three miles a day with me, has a rowdy racing time most days off-leash with some other dogs, and plays vigorously with our children. She’s nice and slim. Dog treats are a waste of money - she gets little bits of kibble as a reward, the occasional piece of cheese or peanut butter.

Plus whatever she can steal - in the last two days, half an apple, a quarter stick of butter, 16 peppermint patties, some carrion deer and some deer and goose poop.

Once they get fat they don’t want to play or run any more.

"Animal Obesity A Growing Problem In The US"

There ought to be a law and a Police/Swat Team to enforce owners (er, custodians) to not over-feed. All dogs must be registered and weighed once a year. If the Department of Domestic Animal Custody guidelines determines a dog is not within weight standards, they will be put down for their own good. Oh wait, the Police already do that for no damn reason.

While they're at, all cats must wear neck cones so as not to endure the torture of coughing on hairballs. It's for the children - think of the mental trauma a child endures when seeing Tabby choking and spitting up - the horror, the horror.

Actually, there should be a law that dogs are not allowed to lick there behind and then lick their custodians. That one, I would support :)

Forgot, dogs should not be allowed to lick their privates in a public place under public indecency laws.

Do I have it covered? If so, contact your local representative and demand they make it so. Or you can tell them to eat your pet's poop. Your call...

Oh, boohoo. Poor fido doesn't live to be 18 rather than 16, but is happy being with the family at dinner. Join Mooshele and her fat ass in dictating who should be fat, skinny, or otherwise. Actually, most people take good care of their pets as I've seen in my 63 years, even better than their children sometimes - animal cruelty notwithstanding.

Here's a thought: Start your own grassroots movement to stop over-feeding pets. You could call it, "Pets - Familiarization About Food (P-FAG)".
