Operation Starfish: Second World War sites designed to look like burning cities
Daily Mail ^ | 1st March 2013 | Mark Duell

'It was a little-known Second World War tactic to fool the Germans - and it certainly did the job.

These extraordinary photos reveal how Operation Starfish helped to dupe Nazi aircraft by creating a number of decoy towns which were built to lure enemy bombers away from more populated areas.

The Starfish Sites - which got their name from the initials ‘SF’, standing for ‘Special Fire’ sites - were designed by Colonel John Turner and were intended to simulate burning UK cities during the Blitz.'

Interesting. I never heard of this but it makes sense that the Brits would employ such decoy system in conjunction with their electronic countermeasures against the German Knickebein, X-Gerät and Y-Gerät RF beam navigation systems.

Yes this was what happened in Blazing Saddles.

The townsfolk along with Bart and the railroad workers designed a Potemkin village resembling Rock Ridge.

Drew in all the bad guys, then... you know the rest.

Rumor has it that one of the wooden mock-up towns was bombed with wooden bombs...

The local city councils couldn’t figure out the best way to handle the aftermath....the destruction had everyone splintered.

Here's an image of the roof of the Boeing B-17 plant in Seattle during the war. The fake buildings on the roof are only about 10 feet tall and the folliage is all netting, but from the air it's pretty effective. And there's no sense in bombing some neighborhood...

Drat.
Dagnabbit, I saw #8 first on this link and was scurrying to throw in the requisite BS ref and was panting, planning and salivating till I got to #5.

You know there is a certain ‘element’ on here that if Sienfeld or Blazing Saddles - even Catch 22 can be cited it gets done.

It is a rough job, but someone must do it....<:

That’s a very cool picture. I remember seeing a book on camouflage that illustrated this very sort of setup to disguise industrial buildings.
