SEFFNER -- A sheriff's deputy plucked a man from an expanding sinkhole, but neither was able to save the man's brother from being sucked into the rubble, authorities said.
Early Friday, authorities said the site at 240 Faithway Drive had become too unstable to continue rescue efforts and the focus would instead shift to a recovery operation.
The sinkhole opened late Thursday in the home's backyard, swallowing one of the home's four bedrooms.
Someone called 911, and a deputy reportedly found Jeremy Bush trying to pull his brother, Jeffrey, out of the hole when he arrived.
The deputy pulled Jeremy from the growing hole.
But Jeffrey Bush, 36, disappeared into the rubble.

Can Doomberg blame this on obesity ?
It was due to the sequester cuts to the anti sinkhole program.
Why couldn’t that have been Soros?
31 As soon as he finished saying all this, the ground under them split apart 32 and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them and their households, and all those associated with Korah, together with their possessions. 33 They went down alive into the realm of the dead, with everything they owned; the earth closed over them, and they perished and were gone from the community.
Marking florida off my vacation list.
Most Florida homes are built on slabs. Probably the case here. Wouldn’t the rebar embedded the concrete tend to span sinkholes until the void became so large that the design loads were exceeded? Watch for building codes make every house slab self supporting from the perimeter of the home. Might become costly.
this is an odd story, would like to know more about the man and his family living in the house.
Yes, but the foundation was designed to be supported by soil throughout the entire base. It quickly exceeds design without that support. It was a slab, not a bridge.
Watch for building codes make every house slab self supporting from the perimeter of the home.
Maybe they will also pass legislation that requires sinkholes to only form inside the perimeter of the home and forbid any sinkholes that form on the edges.
These sink holes rarely reach the surface and stay small. It is foolish to think you are going to design to keep the foundation intact while the soil continues to cave away.
Sometimes,, it’s just not your day.
Insurance adjuster ...
The lost life is not covered by the policy but the clothing the victim was wearing at the time will be reimbursed. Here is $10.
On the upside, the family saved the cost of burial.
Bush doomed by Bush’s fault.
Dude, that’s some really bad karma.
“Sucks to be you!”
Yes I know you didn't, but I couldn't resist, I simply couldn't
heh... blame Moses or one of those guys.
You are one hateful son of a bitch, aren’t you?
It happened in Florida, so I don’t think Bloomberg gets a say in it.
“it has proven somewhat common for sinkholes to open in Central Florida and swallow cars and houses”
Typical media, Ive lived in Fl since 1969. These sink holes usually take days or weeks to get to the point where they will swallow a home or car. It’s not like an earthquake where it happens all of a sudden. I don’t pretend to be an expert and maybe this one did open up all at once but it doesn’t sound like the usual scenario.
Also, it’s not just central Fl, it happens all over FL.
Look for libs to laugh because it happened to the ‘Bush family.’
God please comfort the man who was trying to rescue his brother. Have mercy on the man who was buried alive.
My kids would just erect a small, inexpensive monument over the first pile of dirt I was buried under.
I can’t imagine the horror that must have been. Like the mothers whose children were pulled out of their arms by floodwaters or a tornado.
I think the grace and love of God, together with the hope of being reunited in Heaven, would be all that would get a person through something like that. So Lord, please give this family everything they need to get through this sorrow. Amen.
I don’t want to be a scold, but this man lost his brother in a freak event and a certain portion of the comments here make me sick. My little brother died from cancer ten years ago at age 49 and there was nothing funny about it. I think about him every single day of my life.
Apparently he was sleeping directly above the hole and his bedroom floor collapsed, although the rest of the house remained standing.
Do sinkholes in FL usually appear after heavy rainfall?
Do sinkholes in FL usually appear after heavy rainfall?
I do believe that could be a contributing factor
Wouldn’t it be easier to simply outlaw sinkholes?
“Hi. My name is Boris, and I sell bi-lingual caution tape.”
Looks like the ‘ol F150 might need a pan gasket!
“My kids would just erect a small, inexpensive monument over the first pile of dirt I was buried under”
Two popsicle sticks made into a cross, JR? ... quick n’easy.
But we have bath salts, alligators, poisonous snakes, and lots of sexual predators...
Many things can be joked about; but posters need to think like a reasonable adult at the appropriate times.
As a southerner I have listened to the vilest snottiest more arrogant smears one could imagine for a so called conservative forum
really we are all here for a couple of things:
News of Interest
The option to spout off about it to feel like we are doing something whilst we often feel impotent about our country in decline
but probably most decent folks here have their circle of posters they like and follow and probably know personal info about and just share some parts of their lives together through this association...this is likely the main reason that keeps folks here
the smartassed callous stuff is probably male...younger single cubs just showing off
the forum is overwhelmingly made up of middle and older women at home...many divorced or widowed...I don't see them showing out like this
anyhow...they will call it gallows humour while totally ignorant of what that term really is...where I am from we call it “tacky”
Yeah. I wouldn’t call it “hate.” It’s just callous, ignorant, unfeeling, inhuman jackasses, acting like callous, ignorant, unfeeling, inhuman jackasses.
What a horrible thing, for the entire family. They are apparently still searching for the missing brother and have not given up hope yet. It might be that he is still alive. I would say it’s unlikely, but people have survived unlikely things before. Prayers for the whole family.
Listened to the video here:
It doesn’t sound likely to me that they will recover Jeffrey Bush alive.
I hate to say it, but you guys are jerks.
This was a very modest and, judging by the tattoos, a somewhat downwardly mobile white family living a very modest house in a very modest neighborhood.
So that means you should laugh at them or their deaths?
For most of my 53 years, I have lived in or, at least, had family in Florida. I believe this is the first fatal sinkhole I have heard about. I do know that with the lowering water table in Florida, they have become more common.
umm... I merely said I would like to know more about the family. I did no laughing . don’t know how that warrants me a jerk as nothing was implied by my question.
Because people here always laugh at “white trash,” which is probably what these people were, or at least marginally, and I thought you were doing that too.
My apologies if that’s not what you meant.
Thanks for the reply but I think it’s obvious I wasn’t speaking to you.
OK, that’s alarming. Its like Central Florida is getting sucked down into the void.
Its quite common to ping relevant parties on a thread especially if you are in agreement as we are....and a few others i see
I don't courtesy ping those i disagree with
Why invite heartburn
I don't know why some delight in tragedy
And I'm glad u don't
I feel awful for the man and his family. What a terrifying way to die.
