TAMPA MacDill Air Force Base officials announced Friday they have canceled the Airfest scheduled for April 6 and 7 because of forced budget cuts.
"We waited until the very last minute kind of hoping for a breakthrough," said Terry Montrose, a spokesman for the 6th Air Mobility Wing. "We just came up against some unfortunate circumstances that won't allow it to happen."
Montrose said even a budget breakthrough in the next few days would be unlikely to save the Airfest, given the months of planning required.
"I don't see how we could turn it back on," he said.
The Airfest draws more than 80,000 people and would have featured the Navy's demonstration flying team, the Blue Angels.
Maybe they will cancel some of their schmooze fest parties with officers and Lebanese women who like to exchange emails with Generals in Afghanistan.
Lol
Fighter jets burn through fuel at an exorbitant cost. I have the solution.. CHARGE ADMISSION. People WILL pay to go to an airshow. They are hardcore fans and usually repeat customers (This also keeps the riffraff out). Charge admission, with funds covering fuel costs. Done.
The Obama administration would be P...ed off if the held Kite Flying Contest.
Dust off the 2012 plan (which I'm guessing bears shocking similarities to the 2011 and 2010 plans), and have folks on standby in the event the funding gets turned back on.
Honestly, I couldn't give a fig if the show is held or not, and certainly the DOD budget, like every component of the fedgov, can handle some substantive cuts, but this is just more of the apocalyptic gnashing of teeth...
And in the meantime, BO will receive a pay check and free airfare back and forth across the county for both he and Michelle and all the Congressmen will continue to receive their salary and benefits without interruption. And the golfing outings will still continue.
I agree, charge a fee. People who were planning to come will find a way to be there. I would suspect the show of support would be astounding.
Airshows can easily get tens of thousands of people showing up. Most people would have no problem paying a small entry fee to offset some of the costs.

And the fraud and waste in Food Stamps, Welfare, Medicaid, etc. will continue.
How about cutting the 40 million Americans on Food stamps back by $5/week, that would save $9.6 billion a year. Do the same for welfare and save billions more.
Cut 5% of federal jobs, problem solved for the immediate moment.
Its about time those Navy pilots were grounded. Now lets get the real drivers up there. Go Air Force.
good, If govt can not cover the cost of an air show we should not be wasting taxpayer money at this time.
How much does the U.S. send in foreign aid to countries that HATE US?

Air Force One =

Honestly? This is a good cut. How much time is wasted putting these shows together. I like an airshow as much as the next guy, but when times are tough...it should be the first to go.
There's stuff up the wazoo they could cancel without calling attention to themselves. Guess the Generals are 'good Democrats' and love a BIG public pity party. Nothing is creepier...
I’ve attended many airshows. They could easily recoup fuel costs by charging a fee for attendance, as airshows are almost always free. Canceling the airshow is like releasing illegal aliens.. Just a “look what the Republicans did to you”, punitive action especially since lots of airshow attendees AND PARTICIPANTS are pro-military conservatives.
