TAMPA MacDill Air Force Base officials announced Friday they have canceled the Airfest scheduled for April 6 and 7 because of forced budget cuts.
"We waited until the very last minute kind of hoping for a breakthrough," said Terry Montrose, a spokesman for the 6th Air Mobility Wing. "We just came up against some unfortunate circumstances that won't allow it to happen."
Montrose said even a budget breakthrough in the next few days would be unlikely to save the Airfest, given the months of planning required.
"I don't see how we could turn it back on," he said.
The Airfest draws more than 80,000 people and would have featured the Navy's demonstration flying team, the Blue Angels.
As nice as the airshows are, taxpayers shouldn’t be footing the bill for them. I don’t know how much it costs to put on one of these shows, but if this is one of the results of the budget cuts, we can live without them.
That's for the washouts who can't handle carrier landings.
How about grounding all government airplanes, excepting the military. That would save a lot of money.

Wow...that sucks...being fromTampa this airshow means a lot to the Tampa area. ..
I've been to several air shows over the years, in fact, as recently as last September. The largest I've attended, going back about ten years, was the Dayton Air Show. Anyway, my point is they all charge an admission fee, or at least that's been my experience.
MacDill is an Air Force base. At least it was the last time I was on base.
Airshows are more about PR and recruiting then anything else.
The Cleveland Air Show fee is $19/adult and $12/children. It is an excellent show and is very well attended. I have gone to quite a few air shows over the years around the country. None has been free.

Let them watch “THE RED BARON” on cable
It is a 2008 German film directed by Nikolai Müllerschön about the World War I fighter pilot Manfred von Richthofen.
It was filmed in the Czech Republic and is an excellent action movie I saw (again) just a few days ago that depicts the changing thoughts and the rapid aging of some young men.
I would say the same could follow for some German pilots towards the end of WWII - but not the Japanese pilots.
- But then - what do I know?
I live in the 19th century.

Doesn’t the military already have its 2013 budget?
I sense this is theatrics.
Yeah, that’s why I said that about the Navy fliers, and some didn’t catch my humor, but I let it go. As an older FReeper, I’m just giving everyone a wider birth. The Navy guys should understand that one.
U.S. Releases $250 Million in Aid to Egypt After John Kerrys Meeting With President Morsi
Egypt is trying to meet conditions to close on a $4.8 billion loan package from the International Monetary Fund. An agreement would unlock more of the $1 billion in U.S. assistance promised by President Barack Obama last year and set to begin flowing with Kerrys announcement.
Sequestration? What sequestration?
