Country music singer Claude King died early this morning, according to family members. King turned 90 years old last month. He was born in Keithville and bought his first guitar when he was 12. King, was a frequent guest on the Louisiana Hayride. He often performed in the same shows as Elvis, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Kitty Wells, Jim Reeves and George Jones. King first hit the country top 10 with his song "Big River, Big Man." He followed with "The Comancheros", which became a hit in the 1960's. But his 1962 song, "Wolverton Mountain", would become his signature song. It sold over a million copies. King also appeared in a number of films. King leaves behind 3 sons and a number of grandchildren.

When I was young I thought of myself as Claude King. Now that I have a pretty daughter in college, however, I’m much more like Clifton Clowers.

They say don't go on Wolverton Mountain if you're looking for a wife
Cause Clifton Clowers has a pretty young daughter and
He's mighty handy with a gun and a knife.

RIP Claude King.

One of my favorite singers!

Nobody knows where I came from Nobody even knows my name Nobody cares where I’m goin’ Or if I’ll ever pass this way again
I guess that I was born to wander Never seem like I could settle down I’m as free as the wind when it’s blowin’ I won’t be long in your town.

****

I have seen the warships on Manila Bay watched the sun a setting on the way
I’ve sailed the seven seas I’ve crossed the Great Divide
There’s nothing like this land of yours and mine
There’s nothing like this land yours and my land
From the New York harbor to the Frisco Bay
Up to Mississippi cross the wide Missoury
There’s nothing like this land of yours and mine
[ flute ]
I’ve stood alone in Texas I’ve seen the Broadway lights
Heard a lonesome freight train in the night
I’ve watched the tall corn grow heard a voice that whispers low
There’s nothing like this land of yours and mine
There’s nothing like this land...

I love wolverton mountain. Makes me think of my father. I used to call into the local radio station and request this song as a very young girl.

I was thirteen when I heard Wolverton Mountain. Then there was “Yes, I’m the girl on Wolverton Mountain”.

There was even a Mexican version. All I can remember is,

“Her tender `leeps’ (her tender `leeps’) are hotter than chilEEE!”

Lived to be 90. Claude King had a life. RIP.

Then there is the spoof.

They say don’t go to Tia-juana,
If you’re looking for a wife.
Jose Gonzales has a pretty young daughter,
He’s mighty handy with a gun and a knife.

Her tender lips, are hotter than chili,
And to keess them I don’t dare...

They say don’t go to Three Mile Island
If you’re lookin’ for a wife
For here while back, they had a meltdown
And it’s created new forms of life.

Thanks alot, Dr. Demento.

Very popular at that time and I remember it well. Claude had a good run to last until 90 years of age. Hit up my Ancestry.com and Wikipedia for some almost forgotten information.

Clifton T Clowers.
Born 30th October 1891.
Center Ridge. Arkansas.
Died aged 102 years at Clinton. Arkansas.
buried at Woolverton (as spelt) Cemetery. He was visited at the age of 100 by Claude King and also his nephew who wrote the lyrics to the hit.

I’ve lived my entire life in New England where country music has never been popular so I heard none as a kid. However,Wolverton Mountain,it would seem, was a crossover hit because it was big on Boston radio when it was released.I love that song...a true classic,IMO.

They say don't go on Wolverton Mountain if you're looking for a wife
Cause Clifton Clowers has a pretty young daughter
He's mighty handy with a gun and a knife
Her tender lips are sweeter than honey and Wolverton Mountain protects her there
The bears and the birds tell Clifton Clowers if a stranger should enter there
All of my dreams are on Wolverton Mountain I want his daughter for my wife
I'll take my chances and climb that mountain
Though Clifton Clowers he might take my life
Her tender lips are sweeter than honey...
The bears and the birds tell Clifton Clowers if a stranger should wander there
I'm going up on Wolverton Mountain it's too lonesome down here below
It's just not right to hide his daughter from the one who loves her so
Her tender lips are sweeter than honey...
And I don't care about Clifton Clowers I'm gonna climb up on his mountain
I'm gonna take the girl I love I don't care about Clifron Clovers
I'm gonna climb up on that mountain and I'll get the one I love
