Rand Paul’s filibuster shows the GOP what leadership looks like

Paul focused on the administration’s bizarre unwillingness to declare the drone-murder of U.S. citizens, on U.S. soil, unconstitutional and he tore into Eric Holder’s dodgy answers about limits on Presidential power.

He did this again, and again, and again.

In eight hours, he’d done more to fight for the Constitution than Senators like McCain and Graham have in their entire political careers. …and the effort was catching fire.

Conservatives were, as Ted Cruz put it, “blowing up” Twitter, but it wasn’t just the right wingers who were offering their support. Already, the filibuster had become bipartisan when it was joined by Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon. Left-wing stalwart and Daily Show host John Stewart voiced support during his show. Hacker group Anonymous tweeted their support. The hashtags #StandWithRand, #RandPaul, and #Constitution were trending globally.

The world was watching ...and cheering.

Still, most of the GOP membership was silent. Yes, Cruz and Rubio were on hand to help, but the majority of the Republican Party was, as usual, determined to squander an opportunity. While more “prominent” GOPers were dining with the President, Paul unwrapped a candy bar and kept going.

A few more hours passed and, if you were watching on C-Span, you started to notice more and more faces appear. They should have been there from the beginning but the Republicans had, finally, gotten the message that something amazing was happening. The Johnny-come-latelys, recognizing a PR opportunity, filed in and offered Paul their belated, heartfelt, support.

I was sooo proud of Rand Paul and the rest of them, but boy are the old ‘bulls’ upset; this new group took the spotlight off McPain and the rest of them and put it on the new, fresh, ideas and not afraid to stand up and protect this country....I want to see more of this!!!!!!!!!!

When you know in your heart your are absolutely correct in your convictions, it is OK to stand by yourself.

Rand Paul earned my respect for what he did yesterday. I have respect for precious few these days in Washington.

The term “coward” in its truest sense is one who betrays what is in their own heart.

Rand Paul was living proof of why the GOP loses. He proved that a man who will stand up and fight tyranny is a winner.

People like McCain and Lindsay girl are the reason folks stay home.

That’s an excellent article and I agree with all of it.

What Sen Paul did last night was inspirational, heroic and profound.

On the other hand, it’s doubtful I’d ever vote for Sen Paul for higher office, due to such things as his snubbing of Netanyahu’s speech before the joint session of Congress. Then there are the “pesky” things like his votes to confirm Kerry and Hagel, and probably Brennan.

I’ve always heard that one sign of mental health is the ability to tolerate paradox. I don’t know if that’s true, but I wish I saw more of it in politics.

Isn’t it possible that someone, say Sen Paul, can demonstrate leadership, courage, and a principled defense of our Constitution, yet be someone whose beliefs or positions in other areas are indefensible?

In other words, is it possible to celebrate and be inspired by what Sen Paul accomplished last night, but not want to propel him into the Presidency? Vice versa, I’m seeing a lot of posts today completely dismissing a great Conservative victory last night, for which Sen Paul carried the banner, because they disagree with his views in other areas. IMO, both are equally short-sighted.

Life is sometimes not so black and white.

You know you can’t get that kind of news out of the communist American media.
