A Maryland lawmaker has introduced legislation after a 7-year-old boy in his district was suspended for shaping a pastry into what his teacher thought looked like a gun.
The Star Democrat reports that Republican Sen. J.B. Jennings introduced a bill that would prohibit schools from suspending students for seemingly harmless childish acts, such as playing games with fingers pointed like guns or chewing food into the shape of a firearm.

It’s quite frightening to realize that our society has reached the stage where laws like this are needed.
Not a bad idea- I'm sure the kids were severely traumatized by the behaviour of the school officials ;-)

I started to reply but clicked on your name first and saw that you too live in Illinois.
For many years now, right here on FreeRepublic, I've seen people suggesting or asking, "Why don't you just move out of that liberal hell hole"? What I've found is that it's a whole lot easier said than done.
If I were single, younger, jobless, no family ties, not a property owner, then and only then, it might be simple to pack up and move, except that in that case one probably wouldn't have the money to move.
"Why are you still here"? I'm sure you've been asked the question in some form or other. Most likely for some or all of the reasons I mentioned. It would be almost as difficult for me to move within the state.
I am retired now but my wife is not but we are still looking at Missouri, where people are a bit freer than here. It will be difficult leaving kids, grand kids and great grand kids behind but we would still be within visiting distance (about 300 miles). We still have two middle school age children at home too.
I don't believe there any easy solutions to the liberal pestilence that infests our country.
I don’t move from Maryland for many ofthe reasons you mention. But if I were going to move I would look into Oklahoma.
While its radically more liberal than when I was there in the early 80s, my old high school still has at least some common sense going on.
I saw in the newspaper that they had a bomb threat yesterday. They didn’t evacuate the school. They kept students in the classes they were in at the time, had the teachers look for anything out of place, and staff look around in other areas and had a bomb sniffing dog go through for a quick once over.
New school laws that will soon come about:
All Staplers to have a fixed magazine of only 5 staples at a time. No noise suppressors can be attached. No staple remover can be affixed to Stapler.
Any student wishing to use a Stapler must prove he has had at least 2 weeks of training in use of said Stapler.
Students also must never refer to Staplers as “Staple Guns” as this could cause undue stress on teachers and cause unnecessary lockdowns and possibly some canine pets in the local area of the school.
Pupils wanting to use (Map/Thumb) Tacks and/or, all/any pointy items to be required to take a “Anger Management” course. Those passing said course can be appointed to “Tack Monitor” if Teacher is unavailable.
Thoughts of my weird mind.
With these I could run for office as a Dem. and win easy.

It would be much better for everyone concerned if this legislator would introduce a bill to disband and prohibit Teachers Unions.
No. It's an idiotic bill in response to an idiotic action. We cannot create laws to account for every single occurrence of stupid behavior.
The guy who came up with this bill may be well-meaning, but he's stupid. Might as well be a Democrat.
It doesn't have anything to do with common sense and rationality. Columbine ushered in a whole slew of "zero tolerance" policies that teaching faculty are obligated to enforce. It's easier to simply suspend the kid and keep your job than to use discretion and risk losing it.
That's why we now have no shortage of these crazy stories that make no sense to anyone --except to those in the teaching profession.
In other words, we need fewer laws, not more of them.
I love living in Maryland. I live in a rural, conservative part of the state, and I steer clear of the urban and suburban hell holes.
