Marine with concealed carry permit stops man from beating woman

WEST ALLIS (WITI) — A Marine Corps veteran was able to stop a man early Tuesday, March 12th from nearly kicking a woman to death. It happened near 102nd and Lincoln, and Wisconsin’s concealed carry law made his efforts possible.

Charlie Blackmore was driving home from work at 4:00 a.m. along Lincoln Avenue when he saw something on the sidewalk. Blackmore didn’t realize it was a woman on the ground being kicked in the head and stomach until he got closer.

That’s when he jumped out of his car and sprung into action.

“I said ‘stop’ and he starts coming towards me and that`s when I drew on him. He started getting closer and I said ‘get down on the ground,’” Blackmore said.

Blackmore held his gun on the suspect and called West Allis police. He says several times while waiting for police to arrive, the attacker moved toward him.

“I mean I’ve already made it up in mind that if he came at me I was going to have to take him down and I told him that. I warned him multiple times not to come towards me because he was a big guy and I wasn’t playing around and he didn’t seem like he was playing around,” Blackmore said.

Blackmore says police eventually showed up and had to force the suspect to the ground. They then asked to see Blackmore’s concealed carry permit.

“I put my hands up turned around and said ‘you can grab it out of my wallet.’ Checked my permit, gave me my wallet back, and then interviewed me for their paperwork,” Blackmore said.

West Allis police say that paperwork is not yet available. For that reason, the name of the attacker and his victim have not yet been released.

“She had a really big laceration by her eye and it looked like her nose was broken,” Blackmore said.

Blackmore didn’t catch any names either, but said the victim told him the man is an ex-boyfriend.

“She was not with him anymore and he had stalked her that day or something and he attacked her on her way to work,” Blackmore said.

Blackmore says situations like this are why he supports Wisconsin’s concealed carry law, and the rights of gun owners.

“We do good things. Not all of us are bad or crazy gun nuts. There are good people,” Blackmore said.

The West Allis police chief says these types of situations really are judgement calls for gun owners. While they don’t encourage this behavior, they appreciate citizens watching out for each other as long as they do it legally and are willing to accept the consequences.

What I was wondering was, does West Allis have it’s own seperate PD or is it the milwackee PD that would have responded. I think I knew it was all in the same county. Like the sheriff. Don’t like the chief of MPD. (his excuse is that he came from massachewsits)

The article states that our hero phoned the West Allis Police and they responded. The county sheriff may have gotten involved at some point, but West Allis got the collar.

It’s a miracle that the LEOs didn’t shoot the Marine dead as a matter of protocol.
In some places they seem to consider the murder of American Veterans as some sort of recreational sport.

Since the Marine wasn’t charged with a hate crime for his meddling, may I assume that racial differences were not a factor?

Despite the perp possibly being able to beat the Marine as well as his ex to death, had the Marine capped an “unarmed” assailant we might have seen another Trayvon furor erupt.

Now if that woman only had a whistle to blow, surely none of this would have happened. /s

West Allis does have its own police department. Chief of MPD is a typical liberal.

I’d hate to have to consider risking my entire future over involving myself in someone else’s domestic abuse problems

Yea, I know what you mean.

When I took my mandatory CCW class, we discussed a hypothetical situation similar to what occured here. It really made us think about whether or not to involve ourselves in a situation in which we don't know what lead up to the event.

That was a time when most of the folks didn't have cell phones so standing by and calling 911 wasn't an option........

So if the Marine had been carrying without a permit, it would have been preferrable that the woman get kicked to death?

In that case he should have just shot the perp and disappeared.

While they don’t encourage this behavior...

He saved a woman from being beaten to death and they don't encourage this behavior? Why the hell not police chief?

In West Allis, there is a 67% chance that the woman on the ground and the perp vote democrat. And a 99% chance if they happened to be black. Not sure I would risk my life and liberty to save any democrat from anything. And don’t tell me that the experience might change their point of view - it won’t, lefty thought is a genetic defect.

In his shoes, I would die in prison knowing I saved a defenseless woman’s life than answer to my Lord why I was a coward unable to follow His Word. That’s where the Disciples went wrong, right?

Yes, when one is a ‘decent human being’ that is the first thing that crosses one’s (my) mind.
While I realize that we don’t REALLY know what the reaction will be in a real time situation, I have often told people that know I carry (specifically in a bank) that while I am on the premises, they can feel just a tad safer than usual but if a ‘regular’ robbery is taking place, I will be following orders (or laying in the corner ‘sobbing’ and tending to my ‘fake heart attack’) until it appears the situation is ‘turning south’.
Granted, that is a fine line but.......
I did tell the bank MGR, (young W guy) that if I go into my ‘act’ don’t worry about it or point it out, I am merely positioning myself for the ‘Central (Frontal- if possible) mass shot’, to much ‘splainin to do if you shoot the SOB in the back.

Premeditated? Not really.
Pre Planned? Yes, ALL situations and possible situations, while driving, walking, carrying etc should have a scenario to be hopefully carried out—successfully if possible.

“blow a whistle”

Most unarmed citizens won’t face the “consequences” of confronting an assailant.

Blowing a whistle MIGHT alert someone to call the cops. The irony is that those advocating whistle blowing - while at the same time advocating disarming those who might come to their aide - are truly “blowing in the wind”...

I’m with you. I live and work among Democrats and liberals, and they can change. Anybody can, as God grants it. It’s not my call to decide whether someone should live or die based on their political beliefs. We are all made in God’s image. And if it comes to open war, there are rules for that. But its better to make peace when you can, and when you’re armed, you can. Generally speaking.

“Posts and attitudes like this are NOT good, just my two cents.”

It does not take much imagination to come up a scenario where this situation could have gone very badly for the marine. If the two people fighting are married, the woman could suddenly come to the perp’s defense once the cops arrive and give a story that makes the marine the aggressor. The perp could have attacked the marine using his bare hands and put the marine in the same situation as Zimmerman - especially if the perp is black. Or what if the perp is mentally disabled in some fashion - “armed marine attacks mentally handicapped man”. Bottom line is that the marine did a well intentioned but foolish thing. It could have ended very badly for him. It would have been much smarter to stay at a distance and call the cops, no matter how slow they are about responding. In my opinion, the danger in interfering goes up significantly when you are in a community that does not share your philosophical beliefs or attitudes. I do not want to go to the edge to defend a left wing progressive only to have that person, who fundamentally disagrees with me every important issue including personal responsibility, accuse me of being the problem. I don’t trust them and I won’t fight for them.
