NM update: "Gun control [grabber] advocates are angry"
The Albuquerque Journal ^ | March 14, 2013 | Deborah Baker

With a requirement for background checks at gun shows bogged down in a Senate committee and the end of the legislative session looming, gun control advocates are steamed.

“I am extremely frustrated. I’m angry. I’m disappointed,” said Debbie Kuidis, a retired Albuquerque Police Department deputy chief who has been lobbying for House Bill 77. “What are they doing?”

The legislation sponsored by Rep. Miguel Garcia, D-Albuquerque, would require private sellers at gun shows to have background checks done on prospective buyers before they make a sale.

Garcia’s bill, which has had the support of Republican Gov. Susana Martinez, passed the House and one Senate committee and was sitting Wednesday on a clogged calendar in the Senate Judiciary Committee, where Chairman Richard Martinez, D-Espanola, hadn’t scheduled it to be heard.

“I’m trying to see if I can fit it in somewhere,” Martinez told the Journal on Wednesday. “I haven’t forgotten it.”

It's not on today's lengthy committee agenda:

It's becoming increasingly likely that there will be no gun control legislation passed this session. The session ends at noon Saturday and this legislation has to first be heard in the Senate Judiciary Committee, then be passed in the full Senate, then go back to the full House for concurrence -- all within the next 48 hours! Not going to happen.

Calm down, lady.

They are probably finally coming to grips with the folly of this knee jerk distraction.

If the GOP can kill this in the Senate that will be a humiliating defeat to Obama+CO, and MSNBC too.

Maddow is on the ‘ban guns’ mission with the same enthusiasm she shows for ending DOMA. (somewhat ironically if you think about it)

Seeing that arrogant smile wiped off her smug face would be a joy.

Interestingly enough, I just came back from Santa Fe and the place was “crawling” with State Police. DoubleTree parking lot was, at least, 25% SP-badged vehicles...lobbying on state expense accounting and using state equipment?

Being a Texan, I’m not looking into it...

These background check bills seem to be sponsored by the “holier than thou” big dealer shops which do not like private sales or gifts. By crushing main street they are able to direct traffic to their government approved operations. They think they can stay in business by selling muskets.

I sorely wish Republicans in Colorado had done as well.

They do realize that a thriving secondary market helps drive the primary market. Guns are, among other things, an investment. If the owner can't sell his investment, he's less likely to make the initial investment in the first place.

Also, people sometimes sell one firearm in order to fund buying another. That possibility goes away if there's no way to market the older one.

Seems a bit “convenient” given the debate status at the capital.

The SJC Chairman is from Espanola in northern NM where they like their guns and way of life. In some ways its like the old wild west but with Spanish the predominant language. The area can be violent, law enforcement scarce, drugs and domestic disputes common and Anglos that don't speak Spanish not welcome. Rio Arriba County is the site of the famous Tierra Amarilla Courthouse Raid. Up there many believe guns are the only thing protecting them from the government.

with so many private people working on home coil and rail guns for personal carry, there is no way to stop this.

gunpowder will go the way of the dodo bird. remember when the left panicked it would only be a matter of time before anyone could build a laser ray gun?

Seems a bit “convenient” given the debate status at the capital.

It's a relatively small issue at this point. The governor is going to veto the state budget just passed, legislators are scurrying making deals in the hopes that their pet bills which have survived the committee process get put on calendar for full passage in the House or Senate. These last 48 hours are madness with Saturday morning the worst - if one senator or representative is pissed, he can delay the whole process and legislation that seemed assured of passage dies at noon. And no second chance for two years (next years session is only 30 days and limited to fiscal matters).
