The Fire Department’s new class of recruits — all current city EMTs or paramedics who want to become firefighters — are flaming out fast, failing the Fire Academy in record numbers, according to FDNY sources.
As many as 30 of the 318 probationary trainees — who are older, weaker and fatter than those in previous years — have already quit, and more are expected to drop out before their 18-week course on Randalls Island concludes in May, the sources said.
During the first week of the academy, 166 of the probies flunked the physical-fitness test — which requires four pull-ups, 30 push-ups in one minute, 30 sit-ups in one minute and a 1.5-mile run in 12 minutes.

Well, clearly, the FDNY physical requirements for recruits are discriminatory and too stringent and must be relaxed! After all, relaxing standards is working so well in our military, in schools, in government, in . . . . . . . .

Nearly half — 42.3% — of minority-group members who took the test cleared that hurdle, officials said.
That’s much higher than top-scoring minorities who took the 1999 exam (14%), the 2002 exam (16%) and the 2007 exam (33%).

I remember reading that the director of Police Academy was shooting another movie near a real police academy who latest recruits were the result of recently lowered standards. The director said he was shocked at how many of the recruits were overweight, out of shape and couldn’t do the most rudimentary exercises or follow the simplest instructions - while the instrutor tore out his hair.
From that, came the idea of the Police Academy movies.
Very easy. Too many Doomberg big gulps.

These are the a-holes who won the discrimination suit.
Some are pretty old for this type of training.
My guess is that FDNY will end up in court again and the standards will be lowere to accomodate these older fat people.
