Student who got kicked out of college over ‘Hot for Teacher’ essay sues for $2.2 million

A former student at Oakland University in the suburbs of Detroit is suing the school for over $2.2 million after he was kicked out in September 2011 for penning a salacious essay entitled “Hot for Teacher.”

Joseph Corlett, 57, a builder who now resides in Florida, filed the lawsuit Friday in U.S. District Court in Detroit, reports the Detroit Free Press. He claims the public university violated his First Amendment right to freedom of expression. He says he also suffered mental anguish and humiliation when he was forced to leave the school.

The suit names the school’s board of trustees and two high-ranking officials as defendants.

When Corlett wrote the essay, he was majoring in writing and rhetoric and working toward a bachelor’s degree. The class at issue was English 380: Advanced Critical Writing. The comely blond instructor was Pamela Mitzelfeld.

Corlett named his cursive composition “Hot for Teacher” after the sexually suggestive 1984 Van Halen song. Its undeniable thesis was that he was very attracted to Mitzelfeld.

“There is no way I’ll concentrate in class especially with that sexy little mole on her upper lip beckoning with every accented word,” the nontraditional student wrote, according to the Free Press. “And that smile.”

“I’ve had a few worries lately, the first that Lynn Anne, my wife, would read this. But now I don’t care. I suppose my fear is a good sign that I’m writing honestly,” he also wrote, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

“Whoops, looks like the wife is already in Divorce Court.”

That isn’t true, his wife is supportive, probably becasue she knows it’s a joke.

He told 7 Action News he filed a lawsuit because his civil rights were violated.

“This is about civil rights,” he says.

Corlett says he was suspended for three semesters by O.U. after the university said he violated a policy against intimidating people on campus.

When asked if he’d want to return to classes at the university, he said “I need to keep all my options open. I just need to put this to rest. I don’t want to apply to other universities and have to explain this.”

He says he still has the support of his wife and just wants all of this to be resolved.

“It needs to stop, this political correctness,” he says.

If I were that teacher, I’d be livid. Would not want my name, much less photo, spread about. She’s clearly well educated or wouldn’t be teaching at that level, even to idiots. I’d sue him for every last dime he has.

Universities encourage this sort of behavior and it seems the teacher did as well. Typical though, that they come down with the hammer when it makes them unhappy.

Women are either thrilled by a man saying they're "hot", or mortally offended, depending entirely upon whether they are personally attracted to the man in question.

Usually it is the naughty teacher and I notice these kind of posts have been banned recently. Here we have the naughty student and I hope he wins the lawsuit. Truth is his best defense and she should be modeling instead of teaching English

I find it especially annoying when people misapply the First Amendment to mean that the likes of a private college cannot sanction speech.

Where is the “sexy little mole on her upper lip?”

I missed that, too. Maybe she had a cold sore?

This is just another front in Ubama's war on old white men.

A twenty-year old would have gotten an A.

Thanks Loyalist. He's now 57, married, living in Florida:
"There is no way I’ll concentrate in class especially with that sexy little mole on her upper lip beckoning with every accented word,” the nontraditional student wrote, according to the Free Press. “And that smile.” “I’ve had a few worries lately, the first that Lynn Anne, my wife, would read this. Good idea, filing that lawsuit.

Frankly, he sounds like a 13 year old in a 56 year old body.

Didn’t catch that he was married too.

One assumes that to make a play like that as an independent, while boorish is on the up and up. Doing that while still married brings this to a whole new level of caddishness and exceptionally bad form.

Yeah, the administration was right to have tossed him.

I agree.

What the guy did was distasteful, but completely within the assignment.

I don’t see a mole on her upper lip ... is this female certain the piece was written about her? If not, they’ve expelled the guy for creative writing!

“Liberal college teacher gets what she asks for then whines when it’s from a 57 year old guy who’s lived some life and knows how to play the game better than she can.”

I think your right. I also think he did this deliberately by rolling the dice on a lawsuit lottery. He just needed the school to take the bait which they did. He is 57, living in Florida and 2.2 mil,I would have asked for more, will go a long way to a comfortable retirement even after the lawyers cut. Think of this as form of asymmetrical warfare on the education establishment.

I think it’s funny. Liberal college teacher gets what she asks for then whines when it’s from a 57 year old guy who’s lived some life and knows how to play the game better than she can.

Whole essays could be written on exercising the freedom of expression liberals tout and then being shipped off to reeducation for doing so.

It would be funny except for the double standard. If the same essay had been turned in by a 23 year old basketball player, would the results have been the same?

It appears the fellow in question had a knack for making liberals squirm, pushing their envelope in one direction and then standing his ground over other issues.

Liberals want an echo chamber, not an exchange of ideas.
