As Senate Democrats push ahead with a proposed ban on assault weapons and other gun-control legislation, Republicans are still trying to draw attention to what they see as the bigger issue -- keeping the mentally ill from owning firearms.
A proposal on the issue was introduced this month by South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, who on Thursday again expressed his interest in getting the measure passed.
I believe that the best way to interrupt the shooter is to have a mental health system that actually records and enters into the database people who should not be able to buy a gun, Graham said.
He made his remark while voting against a bill passed by the committee to ban assault weapons and high-capacity gun magazines.
Grahams proposal would require that people found mentally incompetent be added to the National Instant Criminal Background System the database for all new gun sales.

Precisely. If a person is safe enough to be let out of the pen, then they are safe enough to get ALL of their rights back, complete and unabridged.
Bump
The very existence of mental illness is not a certainty. Flame away, that’s okay. To give government the power to take away an individual’s constitutional right based on something as squishy as a shrink’s diagnosis is not a good thing.
Amen!
It’s good that Graham is “digging in” to ban liberal DemocRATS from owning firearms. Those morons are a bunch of loons.
Join the club, brother.
I will agree with that after pardons and paroles are achieved. JMHO.
I also believe a request to the Governor is in order. Some crimes will never restore full rights. You know that.
A crime not totally forgivable (after due reparation) is a crime punishable by death, IMHO.
I totally disagree with that. There are crimes committed with a gun that never resulted in shots fired. Nobody was physically injured. Criminal gets 12 years or so.
Criminal has lost his right to legally possess a gun. Criminal is severely displaced upon release and must work his ass off and use his brain to get ahead.
The last thing on his mind is a gun.
I couldn’t agree more. Once a person has “paid their debt to society” they should be fully restored.
I also think if they start banning people with mental issues from owning guns, many people with depression or minor issues won’t seek the help they need if it means they lose their rights to own guns.
He couldn’t pass either a simple jobs background check or an ATF 4473 Form for a Firearm. Speaks more-than-volumes.
this is very convenient when you control who gets labeled mentally ill!
No joke here, the socialists have already put this out there.

By Whom? A Court Order? The decision of a Medical Professional (God help us)? By the notes of an admitting nurse (like recently in CA gun confiscation)? By Obozo’s State Police who decide to confine critics like in Russia?
“Lindsey the Light” is a very dim bulb and a very poor choice to represent SC in the Senate.
Trust NONE of these Jerks.
Define “mentally ill” Linseed.
Aye, there’s the rub.
I have been advocating this...
In order to even get on a ballot politicians should have to -
- a. have a background check.
- b. be drug and alcohol tested.
- c. take a mental health exam.
- d. take a reasonably rigorous exam on Constitutional knowledge and principles.
0bungles couldn't pass any of them.
Sorry, yes Virginia Tech shooter. Those kids sat their hiding under their desks which offered no concealment, and waited for him to walk along shooting each person. They even waited while he reloaded.
Why because that is what they’ve been taught to do.
We have the voter registration records and we know the neighborhoods these people come from so we can use them to mount a house to house, body cavity by body cavity search of each and every Democrat to find the evidence needed to put them away in prison ~ and to take away their guns!
I know there are those who are going to object that this would violate the First and Fourth Amendments, and maybe the Fifth Amendment, but if it saves one life it will be worth it.
