President Of Argentina Takes Convoluted Way To Rome So Her Plane Won't Be Impounded By Hedge Fund Managers

Newly minted Pope Francis is Argentine, and though he and the country's socially liberal President, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner have had their differences, she went to see him in Rome on his first days.

That sounds pretty standard, but it's the way she got to their visit that's strange.

Instead of flying the state plane to Rome, Fernandez de Kirchner stopped off in Morocco, dropped off her jet, and then boarded a commercial flight to Italy, Argentine site ABC Sociedad reports.

She didn't want any problems.

Last October, a group of hedge fund managers got a Ghanaian Court to sign an order impounding an Argentine warship (La Libertad) in a Ghanaian harbor.

The most high profile member of that group is billionaire hedge fund manager Paul Singer. He and other "holdouts" have been locked in a legal battle with Argentina over $1 billion that they say the country owes them after a 2001 investment in Argentine sovereign debt.

Argentina refuses to pay Singer and co. because other investors restructured their debt twice. Politicians say the holdouts are "vulture capitalists."

Overall this legal battle still isn't over, but when La Libertad was stuck in Ghana, it took two months and some intercession by the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea to get the boat back home.

The last thing Fernandez de Kirchner needs is for something like that to happen to her own plane.

Kinda comical....you have the Presidential jet....which you can’t fly anywhere because someone might shove legal papers in front of a judge who might grab the plane. So it’s just parked out on a ramp and looks great for pictures. That’s a true Banana-Republic.

My wife and I were just discussing this point.
Venezuela, Bolivia, Argentina and a few others have brought back South America as a laughing stock.

Some, Colombia, Chile, Peru, Costa Rica and others are doing well..some very well. Chile and Colombia for example.
A visit here by Americans(north)would show them how far we(USA) has fallen to third world status.

They need that warship (and plane) to engage the new war in the Falklands lizard-neck needs to distract Argentina’s attention away from her failed socialist policies.

Argentina has a long history of running up debt and not paying it. Back at the beginning of the last century the Brits moved in and restructured Argentina's industrial base and it's agricultural focus (building a railroad in the wake of it) so they could get paid.

Lots of Brits were left behind managing things. Those families are still there.

The hedge fund managers that get involved with Argentina know all about the place ~ they should learn to NOT lend money that's not theirs to people who have a reputation for not paying it back short of armed incursions by serious armies.

I'd love to see what would happen if she flew it to the Falklands.

A traditionalist American family has a working husband who has 2.4 children at home, with his wife, and he's also caring for his own parents, and hers.

You guys with your 47% are doing a coverup ~ it's more like 85% ~ so just exactly what is that motivates you to try to evade the real problem ~ that there are too many greedy people out there bidding down the value of the labor produced by traditionalists?

I've read that the new Pope calls them The Malvenas and says they belong to Argentina. So.....
