Man facing a shutdown of camp in Appalachian Mountains for not adhering to building codes

man who has dedicated nearly 30 years to building and living off of his 500-acre farm is facing having his entire way of life shut down by the state government.

Eustace Conway, 51, who has been called ‘The Last Great American Man’ for his rustic way of living, could lose his camp in the Appalachian Mountains, his home for the past three decades.

The Watauga County Planning Department in North Carolina has found several health and sanitary violations in his encampment and has threatened to condemn the buildings.

According to the Wall Street Journal, several officials showed up to his Turtle Island Preserve home and found that his outhouses, kitchens, and even the wood he’s used to build several structures across the properties aren’t up to snuff.

Their findings were summarized in a 78-page report. Now the planning department is demanding that Conway either tear down his structures or rebuild them in-line with public housing codes.

Good thing our pioneer ancestors didn’t have to put up with building codes or we’d all be living in a boat off the coast of Mass.

Did they have a warrant to inspect his house? Why’d he let them in?

Rhetorical Q: Why do we find these type of stories in the foreign press and not ours? (Note tagline)

This sounds like the local government is just trying to get rid of him and is using the building code as a weapon.

They don’t mention the show “Mountain Men”, where Eustace was a central figure. I actually liked the show and assumed it was just on hiatus. I wonder if it is done.

Centralized government and freedom do not mix.

He isn’t dependent upon or subservient to the government and they don’t like that.

Sounds like someone is interested in his 500 acres - and would like to buy it at fire-sale prices after it has been condemned by the local government.

I believe the primary issue is the camps and workshops he runs for money. He’s operating a commercial venture, so he is subject to the codes for public accommodations.

One of the violations included not having properly-labeled lumbar

What do building codes have to do with his back. He can't even see back there.

It took 78 pages for the summary. Doesn’t that prove we have too many laws?

“Rhetorical Q: Why do we find these type of stories in the foreign press and not ours? (Note tagline)”

It's a typical Soviet tactic. Hype the worst stories you can find from other nations but hide all the crap that goes on in your own. Just watch the broadcasts about the USA on “Russia Today”. During peak Soviet times, most people thought Americans were starving and dying in the streets from “greedy capitalism”.

That way the sheeple are constantly thinking “yea, it's not perfect here but at least I'm not THERE!”

Global communications put a little monkey wrench in that scheme but they compensated by making it “cool” to not read the news. The only source of outside information most people use are the TV talkingheads.

The show is coming back on in a few more weeks for a new season. Last episode last season he was hand delivering an answer to Watuaga County riding in on horseback.

It's the mans land. If he wants to live off grid it should be his right. BTW the man has enough smarts to have a hydro electric generator to operate a saw mill which is how he pays taxes etc. He also appears to be almost fanatic about the environment. His land his choice.

This sounds like someone with connections has seen the land and has said I WANT IT, YOU GET IT ROR ME to some local politican. Land like that to a developer for resorts and cabins etc is worth literally millions. But taken by the county could be obtained by the likes thereof for a song. TVA for example in Tennessee has done just that for many decades to private land owners. IOW I smell a rat.

“The Watauga County Planning Department in North Carolina has found several health and sanitary violations in his encampment and has threatened to condemn the buildings.”

This isn’t rocket science. You organize your community to fight these fascist property thieves. Go to your local VFW and American Legion and explain the situation to these patriots.

Next, you show up at County board planning commission with two hundred people. You read them the riot act. I guarantee that these left wing slugs will be terrified and cave in.

The Founders warned you that if you wanted liberty, you must be vigilant. That means organize and confront your local government. If you can’t do that, you deserve your chains.

In many southern counties the county zoning or planning office can be used for many abuses. Actually some hold more power than elected county officials. When I bought a double-wide back in 1991 my county Zoning Board was the major obstacle I had to overcome and the biggest delay. I could have built a home faster. BTW I was putting a double-wide on 30 acres of land back in the boonies. The abuses got stopped when they stepped on the wrong guys toes requiring him to submit to them how many nails and screws he intended to use building his house he was building by himself paying cash. They wanted a HUD house plan from him.

As for the charges in this article as to the outdoor privy? Well in the sticks sewage one way or another goes into the ground. An outdoor privy is no more or no less a health threat than a septic tank with drain field if the owner simply uses some lime and take a few basic location precautions.

I think someone with big connections amybe even n a state level wants the mans land for development. That is usually the case in things like this.

You could be right.

I worked in local government for nearly 20 years. We, meaning lots of vets and a constitutional sheriff, threw a half-dozen liberals in state prison, fired two local fascist police chiefs and busted up a bunch of federal fascist bureaucrats in our county.

Always good to hear from you, cva66snipe.
