Why Liberals Still Detest Fox News
Commentary ^ | 24 March 13 | Jonathan Tobin

More than 16 years after its founding and 11 years after it assumed its current perch as the most-watched cable news network, Fox News remains the favorite punching bag of the left. Liberals take it as an article of faith that Fox is not merely biased but a travesty that serious people should ignore. But the notion that there is something unholy about what is broadcast on Fox or that its mix of news and opinion is uniquely biased has never stood up to scrutiny.

I am puzzled that, with approximately half the country leaning right, only one cable network, and no broadcast networks, cater to this demographic. I am concerned that Fox is becoming more accomodating to the progressives, and I find myself getting all my information from conservative blogs. That said, it does my heart good to watch the lefties get their panties in a wad over Fox.

Fox is doing what the Republican establishment does all too often - which is to cater to their enemies in hopes of winning them over - which NEVER EVER works - all the while driving their friends away.

The left is never happy. Fox is trying to please both sides. They are pissing us off now so they are a complete failure now.

Actually, the goal is to be fair and balanced, to report all or at least as much as possible.

The result is that zealots, both conservative and liberal, hate the process.

On Free Republic we learn that there are many who reject truth when offered if it happens to be liberal truth. On Cavuto we learn that liberals don’t show up because they fear truth being exposed during their interview.

I have a slightly different take - I think for all their success, they still don’t like not being one of the “cool kids” when it comes to journalism insiders, and they’re not - so they’re trying desperately to be that.

I also think the positioning statment “Fair and balanced” is a bunch of focus group driven hooey. The truth is neither.....and the truth is what it should be about...and the truth is that conservatism works and liberalism doesn’t. And no, that’s not fair, that’s not balanced, but it is so.....

We do not subscribe to the extended cable that broadcasts FOX NEWS. Although we watch it at many friend’s homes and when we are on trips and watch about an hour of TV. “News” these days bounces back and forth without the complete thought of an issue being conveyed which just makes us low information constituents. We prefer getting our “news” on the computer and FOX NEWS.com is not the best unless one just wants to look at pictures, IMO.

I crack up at regular shows on the big news stations who allow 2 minutes for intense interviews and they ask stupid questions until the last 15 seconds and then have to go to the next segment. Cooking demonstrations just teach the listener to go to fast food restaurants as if you try and do it in that short of time you will fail with cooking too!

I like Cavuto and Brett Baur, that is about it.

F+F is not watchable because its is just another entertainment show w news stories of no interest to me, its so bad I find myself drifting to see what Mika is whining about, during oatmeal time.

Bert, thanks for a fair balanced summary re Fox News:

“Actually, the goal is to be fair and balanced, to report all or at least as much as possible.

The result is that zealots, both conservative and liberal, hate the process.

On Free Republic we learn that there are many who reject truth when offered if it happens to be liberal truth. On Cavuto we learn that liberals don’t show up because they fear truth being exposed during their interview.”

Well to answer the question of why liberals detest Fox, they do so because Fox (despite left leanings of late) does not parrot back liberal talking points. Fox disturbs their their consensus view of reality and the libs ‘go off’.

This sort of disturbance in The Force can be set off by anyone citing any other version of reality than the one the libs hold at the moment (until they are told to hold a different one).

Then again after such a disturbance, they feel good about themselves having upheld their truth - that you now feel miserable is your problem - or so they wish.

But if you do feel miserable as a result of disturbing The Force and the lib knows, then it was worth the effort of self-validation, and self-vicimazation. They have just had a good day.

I will not disagree.

Regarding Fair and Balanced, consider it a goal that like most in real life is not one hundred percent attainable.

I watch Cavuto, recorded, and he very often has a conservative interview and no liberal because the liberal refuses to come.

Cavuto, btw, is the best interviewer/news show on TV.

Thanks! I just called Comcast and requested that news network. I don’t hold out much hope that they’ll add it to the lineup, but at least it will be sent to their marketing dept and logged in as having been requested!

You are more charitable towards that slogan than am I. I don't think it's a goal - I think it's a fallacious marketing strategy. Truth is not fair, nor balanced, so "fair and balanced" is not a goal I strive for necessarily. I strive for "what is."

But when you tell a big enough lie enough times, it is eventually perceived as the truth.
