Chris Matthews vs Phil Donahue on Iraq Invasion (video, commentary)

. . .With all the memories floating around about the start of the Iraq war ten years ago, I think the thing that surprises me the most is the idea that Chris Matthews was some kind of stalwart opponent of the war who stood up bravely against the establishment. While it's true that he wrote a column (maybe two) in which he expressed opposition, what he portrayed on TV was something entirely different. Indeed, I thought it was well known that he was extremely nervous about being perceived as anti-war, so much so that he endorsed the firing of Phil Donohue. . .

It's hard to believe today but Phil Donahue was fired from MSNBC for his outspoken antiwar stance. Chris Matthews apparently endorsed Donahue's firing.

There were very few against the Iraq war. Those against the war were smeared. Buchanan was called anti-semitic for opposing the war. ‘Everyone’ believed they had WMD. Well ‘everyone’ except the inspectors who looked, they didn’t believe. All those who believed drank the same coolaid ‘intelligence’ doctored reports.

We still live with Donahue's legacy...the hostile talk show format we have today.

And guess where he's from? Yep...Obama's hometown of Chicago.

My question to the people who didn’t advocate war is what would you have done...continue to allow Saddam to pretend he had WMD thereby terrifying the civilized world and continue to defy the no-fly zone?

Mathews is like most lefty jerks. Born about 1944-45, the clown joined the Peace Corps to avoid the military during a war. What a loser. If you cannot serve or refuse to-shut up.

[‘Everyone’ believed they had WMD.]

The National Security Council and the Clinton White House changed the policy on Iraq in 1998 from “containment” to “regime change.” When Bush took office the plans for invasion were on the shelf. WMD was simply a rallying cry. The reasons for invasion were too complex to put on a bumper sticker. But they involved the security of Saudi Arabia, the Gulf states and Israel. The U.S. had thousands of troops in the region with the sole mission of monitoring and suppressing Saddam. Al-Qaeda began attacking these forces in the late 1990’s with the U.S.S. Cole and Kohbar Towers attacks. There was also the humanitarian issue of the Kurds who were undergoing ethnic cleansing under Saddam.

The Peace Corps was a political grooming farm for young Democrats and was often an asset of the CIA. Nevertheless, some of the duty was dangerous.

If you cannot serve or refuse to-shut up.

Careful what you wish for. That'd muzzle a lot of Conservatives as well.

Nothing. The USA is responsible for the security of itself, not that of the whole world. Whatever moral obligations our nation might have had to the world were fulfilled with the fall of the Soviet empire. The free ride should be over now, the Cold War was won.

I didn’t mean the CIA recruited from the Peace Corps but that they sometimes used them as sources.

I remember walking by the MACV compound in Hue during Tet ‘68 and wondering why it seemed virtually untouched compared to the rubble and dead bodies littering Hue and every outpost and base between Saigon and the DMZ. It seemed to me that the NVA would have hit MACV first but somehow it was spared.

“and continue to defy the no-fly zone?”

And keep flying aircraft forever to enforce the no-fly zone?

Colonel that is great. ""The USA is responsible for the security of itself, not that of the whole world. "

We are getting ruined defending the world in blood and treasure. The fate of the British Empire awaits us.

In his testimony, the head of the Iraq Survey Group noted that the Group
continued to look for weapons of mass destruction. He also said he did not believe
that the Survey Group had sufficient information and insight at that time to make
final judgements with confidence as to Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction
programmes and to determine the truth of their existence. He said that more work
had to be done to gather critical information about the regime, its intentions and its
capabilities. He also pointed to a number of practical difficulties facing his team,
including security, delays in translating documentation and the continued reluctance
of Iraqi personnel to speak freely.

UNMOVIC’s final report. TPTB took this to mean there were ‘No WMD’s’, when all evidence was inconclusive.
