Civil rights activist Rev. William Owens, who is founder and president of the Coalition of African-American Pastors, said Tuesday there is no comparison between the civil rights movement and the gay communitys fight for same-sex marriage.
I marched and many other thousands of people marched in this same location years ago on the claim that we were being discriminated against, and today the other community is trying to say that they are suffering the same thing that we suffered, but I tell you they are not, said Owens, who gathered on the National Mall with other traditional marriage supporters in favor of the Defense of Marriage Act.
Owens said there is no comparing the gay communitys fight for marriage equality and the black communitys civil rights movement.
There is no comparison, and for many years, the African-American family and community have been under assault from all sidesabortion, single family households, poverty and a failing education system, he added.

Thank you, Owens!
There is great ammunition to use for our side like this argument above ('you really believe blacks are the same as gays?') and Scalia’s ‘when did marriage become unconstitutional ?’ but lame Republicans keep repeating things like ‘well I believe BLA-BLA-BLA’ and ‘children need ..BLA-BLA-BLA’ when they know EXACTLY how those arguments against gay marriage will be blown away.
Only one side has been fighting to win! Losing isn't everything GOP!
Recreational choices are now equal to civil rights.
Damn straight! Being gay and bullied in school or rejected by loved ones is not the same thing as being black, enslaved, beaten and lynched.
Amen. Many of us will never never relate to that since we had no relatives hurt in these incidences of violence. The gay movement is all about a desired lifestyle they deem for each of us to accept. Ain’t gonna happen.
After a while, so many people throw their hands up and give in that this so-called tipping point is reached. Only those with strong will and an understanding of the moral basis for their beliefs do not bend to the unceasing drumbeat.
This is how they got the public to be against the war on Iraq, too, by the way. The people who control the levers of this society are quite powerful, and seem to be able to get their way no matter what we think.
The problem is most conservatives are too timid to speak up, and those who DO make everyday arguments for "our side" are mostly Evangelicals who just rely on quoting religious scripture, and that plays right into the liberals "talking point" that we're ONLY against gay marriage because our clergy tell us to be (funny, Catholic bishops oppose the death penalty, and last time I checked, I'm for it) and that we want to establish a Taliban-like "Christian theocracy" run by "Christian law" (whatever that is, apparently something liberals believe exists). The religious argument also sails over the heads of many Americans who may be nominally "Christian" but don't practice their faith and could care less what the bible says.
Showing the idiocy of comparing gay rights to civil rights for blacks is effective, as no one can seriously connect the two when you educate people about civil rights. (there are no "straights only" drinking fountains, etc.) The most effective way to do this is to have black speakers who actually played a prominent role in the civil rights struggle. Black clergy can also get away with being MUCH more outspoken and forceful on the issue, without the left being emboldened to call THEM homophobes, "on the wrong side of history", "need to join the 21st century", etc., like they routinely do to white people who speak out. One of the reasons why the fight for gay marriage hit a brick wall in a place where the left seemingly dominates every branch of government (Illinois) is partly because a coalition of over 20 black ministers in Chicago is vigorously fighting it, and the left doesn't know how to respond to this blockade in what is normally a safe loyal Democrat area.
Scalia's argument is good too, it backs gay marriage proponents into a corner because this is another "right" they created overnight out of thin air. Even if they want to scream civil rights and compare it to black people, it took nearly a century from the point where "all citizens have access to equal facilities" was declared constitutional law (1860s) to when society was finally able to establish that in American culture (1960s). The "right" to gay marriage didn't even exist a decade ago. Instead of experts on the bible, we need more experts in constitutional law on our side debating the left on this issue.
One of the most effective arguments I've used with leftists is debunking their "marriage equality" talking point. Every single of them seems to buy into this BS that legalizing gay marriage will result in "marriage equality" for couples who "love" each other. I use their own self-proclaimed standards -- that "consenting adults" should be allowed to marry whoever they want, and ask that if they're for "marriage equality", would they support letting a 19 year old "marry" her grandfather? How about a man who wants to marry all five of his sisters who he's sleeping with? Those couples will swear they "love" one another. This makes the gay marriage proponents extremely uncomfortable and they'll usually respond with some obscenities or claim it's "different" because of potential genetic problems (so you keep it at: "well you're arguing for gay adoption. Why can't fraternal twin siblings who have sex with each other adopt and raise children in that environment? I thought you were for marriage equality?") The left simply can't refute these arguments. I had yet another liberal "unfriend" me on facebook tonight because she had no answer to my argument on this.
But right now, our side is losing the public relations battle and a number of low information adults are buying this insane kool-aid about "legalize love" and "marriage equality". We need to get our act together -- and quickly!
This has nothing to do with supposed “low information voters”, it has everything to do with low family/moral values citizenry. There is absolutely no way to change the current course of social direction. None. Then only way up, is through a hard course of sustained cultural action. We really are playing for all hands in. Wake up. Get up. Move like life means, live or die. Your spiritual alignment is key. Do the next right thing, no matter what fear. Learn, just learn about Honesty and Willingness, to do the next right thing, no matter what you fear. Do not beg, but learn to pray for wisdom. No matter what
allow that queer unions are similar to race based discriminations...the point is that we are all made in Gods image, thus discrimination, or a 3/5 person is not Biblical, and God says so...
He also says that butt-pluggers are disgusting...i believe the term used is *abominable*...and He wasnt talking about snow*persons*...
This is what happened Sunday with Reed, Bower and a third one on the Sunday shows. Reed also mentioned families and raising children but as we see now Just Kennedy is using those as a reason to make Gay marriage a civil right in CA.

Quickly?? Like 10 years ago.
I get the impression that most Republicans just talk to each other, use arguments that are suited for the chior.
Here's what Dems taught themselves to do in the 2000s:
1) redefine the terms of the debate so they favor them : marriage equality, gun safety, and tax fairness and repeat them over and over to the MSM and on camera.
2) Understand your opponents argument in detail so you can dismember it. This is more than listening tio those who you like because they-say what you want to hear
3) #3 goes closely with two. Understand who you are trying to convince, so you understand what arguments he/she will be receiptive too.
I have met retired Republicans here in this deep blue state who live in their own world. They just say to tell anyone they disagree with to go to hell.
FNC is an enterytinament channel while MSNBC is an political activism channel. FNC was playing pre-recorded shows during primetime last night about the sequester and Bengazi while MSNBC (live) #1 story was this marriage case in CA. (all FNC primetime shows are pre-recorded unlike MSNBC). FNC looks to be avoiding the whole case and story, its capitalism $$$ at its best/worst.
I’ve said for many years that the homosexual rights crowd insults blacks every time they make this argument.
I’ll add that poligamists and those that want to marry their own father or mother can make the exact same arguments the homosexual marriage crowd is attempting to make.
Further, if they actually win, we will have created a “tax group” that is no longer connected to the definition of the word “marriage”. It will be a redefining of the word and call for new words, just as crippled became disabled and differently abled. Words are just symbols. When you change the word that descibes a thing, eventually the new word has the same meanings in the consciousness of the people in the culture as the old word did. It’s why the social engineers have to keep changing it.
Just as some states have two kinds of marriage; one called “Marriage” and the other called “covenant marriage”, the latter being what the word “marriage” used to mean on its own, this will require a change in the language. Eventually the words used for “homosexual union” will mean the same thing, regatdless of what words are used. And the new phrase used to describe what we now call “normal marriage”, will mean “normal marriage”.
But the legal ramifications of this are very interesting. It means a couple of heterosexual guys that have no intention of ever marrying and producing kids could get “married” for tax purposes and continue to date other women and maybe even live in common law marriage with different women at different homes. The whole thing is a legal nightmare.
I think the ultimate solution might be to eliminate all FedGov benefits to being married and everyone simply has a right to assign their legal existence to a “couple” including themself and another person - any adult person.
And then the poligamists enter the scene and screw it up again. :-)
If this was an adult nation, the court would rule 9-0 that Marriage is marriage - it is what it always has been - and these guys, if they want the benefit of marriage, can find a member of the opposite sex that is not a blood relative and not already married and tie the knot. Otherwise, piss off.
All NPR is talking about is homosexual marriage and gun laws right now.
Even their story about TV remotes was an opportunity to interject it. They talked about the complexity of remotes causing young children to need their parents help to watch television. So, to bring human interest in it, they use an example of a particular little boy and interview him and his “dads”.
Yep, both his fathers have to help him use the TV.
Yet again they jumped the shark, exposing their agenda in front of God and everybody.
Indeed. I used to be of another mind but I don't really care for "infotainment" anymore. I have not regularly watched Fox News in years, I used to be glued too it.
Not only that but FNC pre-records all their prime-time shows while activist MSNBC does all theirs live till 11pm and much later during critical political events.
So when a critical battle is brewing on the congress floor or a surprise new event you will see FNC segments on relatively irrelevant stuff.
Dems love winning.
