Reclusive North Korea is to cut the last channel of communications with the South because war could break out at "any moment", it said on Wednesday, days of after warning the United States and South Korea of nuclear attack.

The move is the latest in a series of bellicose threats from North Korea in response to new U.N. sanctions imposed after its third nuclear test in February and to "hostile" military drills under way joining the United States and South Korea.

I bet if we just give them some money, they will stop making threats for a year or two

Yeah there are no “inner city” or gangbangers in Korea. Even the idea is preposterous.

Maybe they are using the “little boy who called wolf strategy”. Threaten or call wolf so many times that everyone will ignore them, and then they will do what they say. (nightmare scenario of the day) China would never let anyone retaliate against North Korea.

"It used to be if you came from a S.Korean family of means, you could get your kid into serving as a ‘KATUSA’ in the US Army in S.Korea. Korean Augmented to Serve in the United States Army)...By and large, they were scubs."

I commanded a company of 177 soldiers in Korea, about 20-25% of whom were KATUSAs. There's some truth to what you say, indeed, while I was there, there was a scandal involving a ROK general taking bribes to get certain kids into the KATUSA program, and IIRC, he was relieved.

Certainly most KATUSAs do come from wealthier families. One of the primary qualifications for the KATUSA program is a test of written and spoken English, and speaking in broad generalities, the wealthier kids tend to be better educated, have had greater opportunities to study and be tutored in English, and consequently do better on the tests. I had at least a few KATUSAs who came from poorer backgrounds, and made pretty decent soldiers. I also had some who were in various stages of degree completion when they were conscripted and were very bright. Quite honestly, there were a few whose written communication skills (in English) were better than some of the newer recruits who were recent HS grads from the US.

While I was there at least, each company sized unit had a ROK staff Sergeant Major attached. Since KATUSAs are not subject to the UCMJ, discipline is enforced through the ROK military, and about the worst thing that can happen to a KATUSA is to be sent to the regular ROK Army, which by all accounts, is roughly the equivalent of a cop being thrown in prison.

As an MP company commander my unit had a lot more contact and interaction with ROK civilians and authorities than probably most other units, and our mission (garrison or combat) would have been virtually impossible without them.

I was stationed there in 2000-2001. They were putting the final touches on a high-speed rail from Seoul to Pusan. I had to travel throughout the country and saw numerous high-rise apartment complexes going up. Very friendly, even most of the young people.

If the South Koreans were smart they would bait the Norkskys into making the first move..

Unfortunately, North Korea's first and only move would involve the destruction of Seoul South Korea

Good point.. the Nork’s are so brain washed probably riddled with versions of Stockholm Syndrome..

Some maybe even most are mentality challenged in some way..
Whew.. from daylight to dark.. like “Tron” conducted in Detroit..
Who knows Detroit might be looked on as heavenly to them..

Mao at least murdered his subjects, Dear Leader seems to have performed lobotomy on his..
“1984” or “Animal Farm” in reality.. maybe even worse..

Unfortunately, if the South Koreans had been proactive, they’d have taken maybe 2 or 3 percent of their GNP for the last 20 years, on top of their other defense spending, and devoted the additional expenditure to methods of knocking out most of that artillery the North has aimed at Seoul. Then instigate the flare-up, before the Norks have effective means of delivering their nukes.

It’d still be messy, to be sure, but Seoul would be moderately damaged, not destroyed.
