Forget Gay Marriage: What About The Decline Of Marriage?

Marriage Decline: The disintegration of the nuclear family — particularly in the African-American community — and the rise in fatherless homes have greater societal implications than gay marriage, yet few pay attention.

The debate over gay marriage has taken center stage with two cases, one involving California's Proposition 8 which bans it, and the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) which bars federal agencies recognizing the validity of same-sex marriages in the states where they are legal, now before the U.S. Supreme Court.

We have argued that the civil purpose of marriage is not and never has been to reaffirm the love of two people for one another.

Nor is marriage primarily a business arrangement.

This country and healthy societies around the world and throughout history have given marriage between a man and a woman special legal protection because of the recognition that it is the one institution that ensures the society's stable future through the orderly procreation and upbringing of children.

In this context, we find the decline in marriage and the rise in illegitimacy, prime factors in crime, poverty and societal decay, being virtually ignored as the Supreme Court looks at the penumbras and emanations from the Constitution to decide whether Adam and Steve can legally tie the knot.

We should be more concerned about that than about gay rights and free contraceptives. As traditional marriage breaks down, so does society.

We have certainly come a long way from "The Cosby Show." In 1965, Daniel Patrick Moynihan wrote "The Negro Family: A Case for National Action."

At the time, 25% of black children were born out of wedlock, a number Moynihan called alarming. Today, 72% of black children are now born out of wedlock. In fact, 36% of white children are born out of wedlock.

Marriage is vastly overrated and has ruined a lot of perfectly good relationships.

I have been married twice; once for 5.5 years, once for 25.5 years and I will NEVER do that again.

Over the past 100 or so years, the progressives have attacked marriage on several fronts: easy divorce, encouraging promiscuity, and saying that adultery is no big deal, gaining control over the schools, promoting pornography and obscenity. The goal is and has been the destruction of the traditional American family and to destroy churches as meaningful institutions in the U.S. The push for normalizing homosexuality is just the latest front.

As marriage disintegrates so does society. That was the point of this article. Some think it is clever to make snarky comments instead of realize that this is a serious issue. I have known people who don’t bother with marriage and they and their children don’t do well. The results are horrific. The children have trouble functioning. The Democrats only answer is more money spent on more programs which serve no real purpose and drain the economy. There is no substitute for a two parent family. The Democrats think a family is anything you decide it is, and many conservatives are too busy to pay attention.

Marriage was the best thing what ever happened to me.

Me too. I don't know what my wife sees in me, but all our years together have been happy and blessed. I'm a lucky man.

I think the argument can be made that slave-descended black Americans have decided to become extinct. That they have chosen, by several means, to die out as a people.

This is not a conscious choice, but a cultural one. And there are many white people more than willing to enable this choice. To speed them on their way to self extermination.

It is unlikely that it is universal among them, as some still evidence a strong will to live, to procreate and succeed in life. But for the majority, it seems the end cannot come too soon.

For the rest of us, there will be a hundred years of speculation as to why slave descended black Americans chose to do this. It is a good question if we will ever know for sure.

Marriage is a contract and a vow between 3 parties, God being one of the parties. I don’t think He is going to be very happy about everyone messing with His grand design for proliferation of the species. In time He will fix the problem, nature has a way of culling.
