IN MEMORIAM
T/4 HARVEY E. ROOKUS, USA

T/4 Harvey E. Rookus, USA,
Hq. China Combat Command, WWII, died 18Mar2013

I have fought a good fight,
I have finished my course,
I have kept the faith.
2 Timothy 4:7 (KJV)

"Arm yourselves, and be ye men of valour, and be in readiness for the conflict; for it is better for us to perish in battle than to look upon the outrage of our nation and our altar. As the Will of God is in Heaven, even so let it be." (1 Maccabees 3:58–60)

God Of Our Fathers

Rest in Peace, fallen brother, rest in peace!
We who remain hold you in high honor.
Rest, fallen brother, in this sacred precinct;
We who remain keep this place sacred.
Rest, fallen brother, among these, your comrades;
We who remain keep the watch.
Rest, fallen brother, among these who answered the Nation’s call;
We who remain press the fight forward in your name.
Rest, fallen brother, lay down thy burden;
We who remain have taken up the torch.
Rest in Peace, fallen brother, rest in eternal peace!

Every morning I woke up looking like a waffle.

These are fascinating tidbits.

Thanks!

We were flown from Dum Dum Airfield (now Calcutta International) to Chabua Air Base (Upper Assam, India), via C-47. We flew from Chabua to Kunming, China, Yunnan Province via a C-46 named "Double Trouble". When we took off from Chabua I noticed fuel pouring off of the right wing. After dragging the Flight Engineer down to look at the problem we returned to Chabua. They filled up the tanks and we tried again. This time we found an engine not acting right and another return to base. This time they put a new set of sparkplugs in both engines and we tried again and made it. From Chabua to Kunming was approximately a five hour flight over the infamous "Hump", without oxygen and you sleep well as the crew goes on oxygen at about 12,000 feet. This put us into Kunming on 15 July '44.

Upon arrival in China, we were put in an Operations Center to await transportation, when a sergeant came in and asked for "two more coolies" to help unload the plane. Why? Because they just shot the last two for stealing. One stole a pair of socks, the other stole a pack of cigarettes. Simple (No more Stealing). This was done by the Chinese Army MP's. We ended up being housed at a former girls' school, now the HQ of Y Force, China. After meeting our compatriots of the 993rd Signal Company we started some training. We spent many days in the field with a Radio Operator practicing our radio and code work. On one occasion we were set up under some trees with our radio station, which consisted of a radio powered with a Hand Crank Generator, usually cranked by a Chinese soldier, a radio operator and a cryptographer. This day a brilliant Chinese soldier decided to knock a wasp's nest out of the tree above us. Panic city! The radio op split and also the coolie cranking the generator. I finally got another one to crank in the power and I ran the radio. I kept being told to slow down, which was funny as my Morse Code dated from my Boy Scout days.

Prayers for the Bride and for you, Sarge. May God grant that her ailment is not serious, that she recovers completely, and that you have a long, very happy life together. Amen.

My Dad was in China during WW2, and your Dad’s stories remind me of some of his.

I am enjoying your posts so much, Kathy!

...has allergy weather gone away?

Is Murfie enjoying the weather?

No, the spring allergies are really bad. All the trees are blooming and the pollen is so bad, I have to clean the windshield every day.

Good afternoon, Kathy!

*HUGS*

Thank you so much for sharing the entries from your Dad's Diaries! They evoke vividly the details of his service and sacrifice on behalf of our Beloved Nation!

You must be so very proud, and justly so!

Good Evening, Folks!

Here I am with an update on The Bride’s condition.

After hours of blood work, IV tests and observations, The Bride got released from the VA Hospital just a little while ago. The workup shows no cardiac arrest, no defib, and no angina. All of the major problems came back negative. She is having to deal with a stomach virus, which I understand now is rampant around the Tampa Bay area, but that can be treated at home.

Right now, The Bride is racked out and sleeping, with a doctor’s note from work tomorrow, and will be back to her normal schedule Monday. Sometime soon, we will take her into outpatient for a stress test. We have a scrip for nitro for home and work use, as needed.

Folks, we dodged a big one today.

Thank you all.

SARGE & THE BRIDE

Kunming had been the main base for the original Flying Tigers (American Volunteer Group) under General Claire Chennault but was now the 14th Air Force HQ. The 993rd Signal Company was one of many Signal Companies handling communications as well as supplying Radio Operators and Cryptographers to the Chinese Armies in Y Force units. After a few weeks field training with a Radio Operator, it was found that I had taken drafting in school and a draftsman was needed in the Engineering Office in HQ so I was transferred from the 993rd to Y Force Engineering HQ under a Colonel Shaeffer. Kunming was the Headquarters of the Y Forces in China. There were some 300 enlisted men with 72 “Bird Colonels", but only one 2nd lieutenant. One of my jobs was keeping situation maps up to date so we always knew the positions of both the Chinese and Japanese units. I also kept track of our airstrips. We had L-5 (Stinson Observation plane) strips, and 25 (Medium, twin engine bomber) strips. If a B-25 could land on it it could also be used for C-46 and C-47 aircraft. Another of my jobs was to do Photo Interpretation from Aerial Photos furnished by a 14th Air Force Photo Recon Group. The Japanese had moved along the railroad and road towards Kunming. As the Chinese had to retreat they blew all the bridges. It was my chore to figure out what size bridges we needed for replacements. I became pretty good with a stereoscope which puts things into 3-D so you can make measurements.

I also became adept at reading photos without the use of the stereo. A few thought I was a little weird to do this, but it is just one of those things that you learn.

I don't know if he brought home the very one he used, but we have one somewhere...I've looked in it.
