Green Party leader Elizabeth May says the Harper governments latest treaty pullout is turning Canada into the North Korea of environmental law as the opposition angrily denounced the move to withdraw from a UN convention that fights droughts in Africa and around the globe.
So upset Harper pulled us out of another global [environment] treaty. Hes making us a rogue nation. The North Korea of environmental law, May tweeted Thursday.
Heritage Minister James Moore called Mays tweet classy.
Canada quietly became the first and only country to drop out of the UN convention on drought prevention, which actually caught officials at the world body by surprise when it was contacted by The Canadian Press for a story on the matter.
The federal cabinet ordered the withdrawal last week on the recommendation of Foreign Minister John Baird, but provided little reasoning initially.

Canada Ping!
Sounds like Harper is doing a great job!
If the Green nutters got control of Canada, they’d make it into North Korea, period.
Raise the Red Ensign boys!
Agenda 21, everybody fall in line! /s
And the other 80%? Gee, I wonder whose corrupt pockets that ends up in?
Good for Canada.
It sounds like Green Party leader Elizabeth May fell right into a trap.
What a moron!
She’s the Homer Simpson of politics.
(( ping ))
If you had to make a list of countries that would have little concern about a serious drought, Canada would top the list. It’s population is one tenth of ours, and is disproportionately located near the Great Lakes. You may as well worry about the United States withdrawing from the International Treaty on Cricket Reform.
Who says Canadian Conservatives are not conservative?
The GOP (and many “conservatives”) in this country is so Free Trade Communist that any thought of foregoing a UN Agency would be attacked with the liberal canard of “isolationism and protectionisism”
Dumping any UN Agency is a start...good move Canada and PM Harper
Canada has as much as 1/3 of the worlds above ground freshwater with its many lakes and rivers to the north.
Find a good map of Canada and see how many rivers and lakes it has in the north....and how few towns.
Canada has huge oil reserves with the Tar Sands... but its water resources may be more valuable in the decades to come
Your post reminds me of an awesome filibuster the Conservatives pulled off in the Ontario Legislature back in the early 1990s. Every bill before the Legislature has to be read into the record, so they introduced one with a preamble listing every waterway in the province.
