It was in the 20s most of the week. It hit 50 today for a while - and the weekend rain is predicted. My poor blooming daffadils are in denial and the tulips haven’t even sprouted yet.

Stealing works best when the folks one robs have been dead a few years. (LOL)

Here are some words I wrote to the main theme from St. Matthew’s Passion by Bach:

When Bach composed this music
I’m sure he had no idea
that 200 years later
the song would reappear
On Rhymin’ Simon’s Album.
I guess it was supposed
That Johann couldn’t sue Paul
Because he’s de-composed.

(I late found out that Bach stole the tune as well! hahaha)

Chorus, Recitative, Aria

The chorus is in 7/4, an unusual time signature. At 1:25 the orchestra enters in a different key, and it’s a miraculous moment of dissociation. Jesus looks absolutely overwhelmed. He scatters the moneychangers. Upon calming down, the musical material for Jesus’ short aria is a preview of the Gethsemane aria that comes later. It’s a brilliant flash-forward, a tip of the hat to Mahler.

The Temple

Arias

These two videos should have been kept together. Mary Magdalene calms things down with a short reprise of her earlier aria as a preface to her big hit aria for the opera. Andy unashamedly steals from Mendelssohn and goes all commercial. Have a box of tissues ready for the end.

Ode to King Kong: (Beethoven’s 9th). I write these silly lyrics to help kids with rhythm and note-values. It works! :-)

King Kong was a giant monkey
Who behaved just like a jerk
He fell in love with a human
Even though it couldn’t work
He climbed to the top of a building
Ready to enjoy a feast
Then the airplanes shot him down
they said twas Beauty killed the Beast.

I’d love to hear the rest of your Freud lyrics! LOL!

I wouldn’t mind, but Paul doesn’t give JSB any credit on the album OR the sheet music!

At least with a “Whiter Shade of Pale” there was some question about if it was JSB or not!

And “Lover’s Concerto” gave full credit to the master.

Aria, Trio, Recitative, Chorus

This is a mixture of hard rock, Orff, Ravel and Prokofiev, an attempt to portray evil. Judas spends his aria explaining why he is going to betray his leader, hoping to find some justification for it, and trying to convince himself that he’s doing the right thing. This is some of Rice’s best work in the opera. Annas and Caiaphas cut through all the excuses and put it in simple commercial terms: thirty pieces of silver. The musical material is from “This Jesus Must Die”. After a recitative from Judas, a crowd of shrouded figures sings quietly like a Greek chorus.

Chorus, Recitative, Aria, Duet, Chorus, Duet, Chorus

We all get a chuckle at the chorus with the line, “Then when we retire, we can write the Gospels.” It has the simplicity of Bach. Jesus enters with a recitative containing the words of the Consecration, which are stated in frustration and admonition, accompanied only by a piano and a pair of bassoons. The aria begins with the music from the middle of “Everything’s Alright” in 5/4, but nothing is right, and the orchestra illustrates the chaos. Judas turns it into a duet, but the Apostles take up the opening chorus in 2/2 to relieve the tension between the antagonists. It doesn’t work. Judas goes on the warpath, and Jesus orders him out. In a flash-forward, Judas takes up the opening of his big aria that comes later, but ends it with a scream of frustration. The Apostles take up the chorus to end the scene.

Don’t feel bad about the ads. SOMETIMES they are for my music agency.

I kid you not. I have gone to links and there are ads for....ME! LOL.
