Latvia rescues 220 people stranded on ice floes in Gulf of Riga

Latvia's rescue service said it had rescued more than 220 people who became stranded on large ice floes in two areas in the Gulf of Riga.

The state fire and rescue Service spokeswoman, Viktorija Sembele, said boats, ships and helicopters were mobilised in the rescue operation after large sections of ice broke away from the shore and drifted into the gulf, pushed by warm southerly winds.

Sembele said 180 people were rescued in the town of Vakarbulli near the capital, Riga, as well as 41 in the resort region of Jurmala.

Rescue operations involving people stranded on ice floes occur frequently in the Baltic states, particularly with ice fishermen, who often stray far from the shore.

The ice had drifted in strong winds about 4km (2.5 miles) from the shore by the end of the operation, she said. Only one person needed medical attention, Latvian Public Radio said.

It seemed like a really good idea once all the vodka bottles were empty.

Fishing.

It happens pretty often on the great lakes as well.

You might listen?

The ( New ) Gates of Babylon Have Fallen, Fallen

On Sunday last it was reported that the National Bank of Spain was Insolvent. They are head quartered in the twisted twins, "the Gates of Europa' building in Madrid.

The mighty political leaders of the EU who made this decision operate out a building named the New Tower of Babel to mock God just as the ancient City of Babylon mocked God. Ezek, Isaiah and Daniel expound on the fall of Babylon and her mighty gates.

Would you like to know why this tells us the collapse has already begun? I'll PM it to you.

Fishing.

Yep.

You don't know what cold is until you've spent a day on a frozen lake trying to catch enough lean perch for dinner; even then, you don't really know what cold is until you step through someone else's abandoned hole covered with a paper-thin skim of ice and a few inches of fresh snow. That, by all gods I disbelieve in, is cold.

Doing that - and being able to get out and beat hypothermia - is a standard training exercise for Arctic troops. (At least it always has been for the British Royal Marine Arctic training camps in Northern Norway, so I imagine it would be the same for other countries' forces). Particularly difficult if you're on skis at the time!
